4 5 th February 2010 FP7 Prep WP9000 Progress Meeting 4 CANARY Overview CANARY is funded by a combination of French and UK funding, along with FP7 Prep and FP7 OPTICON JRA-1 Additional funding from: –STFC –INSU –Observatoire de Paris –Durham University UK STFC funding for Phase C approved but frozen –Decision expected soon! FP7 Prep funding covers systems engineering support and key component selection Layout of upgraded Nasymth platform at the WHT

5 5 th February 2010 FP7 Prep WP9000 Progress Meeting 5 CANARY Status Phase A on-sky dates awarded from 21 st to 28 th July (6 nights) –2 months later than originally planned Principal optomechanical subsystems have been assembled and are undergoing testing CANARY instrument control system is being integrated with the hardware Full system integration in Durham begins next week

6 5 th February 2010 FP7 Prep WP9000 Progress Meeting 6 Key Components: Telescope Simulator Passed initial acceptance tests in December 2009 Minor modifications required to phase screen motors and fibre source clamps Modifications completed and system being delivered to Durham next week Field lens/Fold mirror assembly also completed –Required for AIT tests with the Telescope Simulator Telescope simulator integration (UKATC)

7 5 th February 2010 FP7 Prep WP9000 Progress Meeting 7 Key Components: AO Path AO path has been aligned –Dummy DM flat mirror used –Avoids DM flattening routine –Allows alignment jig design WFE ~55nm RMS –Error budget allowance of 104nm RMS Throughput –60% @ 633nm with DM flat –Expected 69% in V-band with DM –ADONIS DM to be measured AO Path aligned with dummy flat DM (Durham) Flat mirror in place of DM

8 5 th February 2010 FP7 Prep WP9000 Progress Meeting 8 Key Components: Low-order DM ADONIS DM re-polished –Less than 50nm RMS error after flattening 4% open-loop error after calibration Tested using SESAME –Closed-loop SR = 0.39 –Open-loop SR = 0.35 Currently integrated in Durham –DMC testing –Truth Sensor interfaces –NCPA removal Closed-loop CANARY DM and Truth Sensor testbench (Durham)

9 5 th February 2010 FP7 Prep WP9000 Progress Meeting 9 Key Components: NGS WFSs 4 x Andor Ixon (E2V 128x128 EMCCD) selected –3 x open-loop tomography –1 x closed-loop All cameras have been interfaced to the RTC –2 cameras in Paris –2 cameras in Durham Cameras have been integrated with: –SESAME for open-loop tomography tests (LESIA) –DM testbench for closed-loop control and interface tests (Durham) NGS Pickoff optics aligned (LESIA) –Installed on 2 of 3 cameras Truth sensor being integrated with main AO path (Durham) NGS pickoff and WFS optics before alignment (LESIA)
