6 Schedule & Budget Schedule: 73 % of System Design Phase work complete through Jan. –48% of remaining work is system design. Wrapping up at conceptual level. Budget: 89% of SD Phase budget ($1170k) spent through Jan.

7 System Design Review Date: April 21, 2008. Reviewers: –Brent Ellerbroek (TMT) –Bob Fugate (formerly of SOR) –Andrea Ghez (UCLA) –Norbert Hubin (ESO, Chair) –Nick Scoville (Caltech) –Gary Sanders (TMT) Review will follow WMKO guidelines: –SDR package distributed with 2 weeks for reviewer comments –Reviewer response distributed prior to review & final agenda set –SDR will focus on issues identified by reviewers Charter & draft materials can be found at http://www.oir.caltech.edu/twiki_oir/bin/view/Keck/NGAO/SystemDesignReview http://www.oir.caltech.edu/twiki_oir/bin/view/Keck/NGAO/SystemDesignReview

Science Case Requirements

9 Progress on Defining Science Requirements Release 2 of the Science Case Requirements Document is complete Release 2 of System Requirements Document is almost complete –Observatory requirements further developed –Remaining tasks identified and assigned –David Le Mignant & Liz McGrath supporting this effort

10 Updated Science Requirements Summary

11 Each Science Driver has a “Requirements Table” Summarizes requirements discussed in text and figures Formatted for input into System Requirements Document and into the Contour Database of Functional Requirements Example: part of the Requirements Table for High- Redshift Galaxies

12 Progress on Science Cases Key Science Drivers: new analysis and content –Galaxy Assembly and Star Formation History: analysis of cooling requirements to decrease background –Nearby Active Galactic Nuclei: discussion of required spatial resolution –General Relativity Effects at the Galactic Center –Extrasolar Planets around Low-Mass Stars: definition of 3 target sets with distinct requirements –Multiplicity of Minor Planets: optimum wavelengths and sampling Science Drivers: new analysis and content –QSO Host Galaxies –Gravitational Lensing (by galaxies and clusters) –Characterization of Gas Giant and Ice Giant Planets & their Moons –Backup Science (be sure we can do good NGS science when laser can’t be used)

NGAO System Design

14 AO Opto-Mechanical Design Visible Imager NGS WFS Rotator NIR Imager to OSIRIS LGS WFS Deployable IFS DM1 DM2

15 AO Wavefront Sensor Design LGS pickoff & WFS Tip-Tilt Sensor

16 System Configurations Science Cases drive the AO system configurations (i.e., required hardware & control)

17 System Configurations

18 Summary Management –Replan for remainder of system design phase completed –Good progress on Systems Engineering Management Plan –On track for System Design Review –NSF TSIP funding for preliminary design! Technical: –Subsystem design phase completed –Functional requirements completed Team remains committed & excited about NGAO!
