Presentation on theme: "Health and Safety Manual Section C3 Cryogens. Cryogens  Fluids which at ambient temperature cannot be liquefied solely by pressure  Include liquid oxygen,"— Presentation transcript:

Health and Safety Manual Section C3 Cryogens

Cryogens  Fluids which at ambient temperature cannot be liquefied solely by pressure  Include liquid oxygen, nitrogen, argon, hydrogen and helium; solid carbon dioxide

Hazards  Oxygen deficiency- < 19.5%  Oxygen enrichment- > 22%  Cold liquid  Over-pressurisation in closed containers  Manual handling

Standards Risk assessment needed, covering:  Handling of cryogens  Filling of cryogens into containers  Transportation – esp. in vehicles and where lifts and staircases are involved  Storage and use in confined spaces and other areas with little or no ventilation

Risk Controls  Oxygen monitor, set at 19.5% / 22%  Sufficiently large room  Adequate ventilation  Rescue and first aid provision  Presence of at least two people

Risk Controls  Regular checks to ensure container venting mechanisms work effectively  Never travelling in lifts with cryogens  Suitable equipment  PPE  Training – inc. manual handling
