2 Ibrahim Shamia Pathological Specimenes 2 Surgical Specimens  All tissue removed during the surgical procedures is sent to the pathology laboratory for verification of the diagnosis.  Tissue specimens may be stored in a refrigerator in the laboratory or in some other location within the OR suite until they are taken to the pathology department at the end of each day’s schedule of surgical procedures or intervals during the day.  Correct solutions for storage and correct labeling of specimens are critical for accurate diagnosis.

3 Ibrahim Shamia Pathological Specimenes 3 Care of Specimen Types of Surgical Specimen: - Types of Surgical Specimen: 1.Pathological Specimen (Tissue). 2.Cultures. 3.Smears & Fluids. 4.Stones. 5.Foreign Body.

4 Ibrahim Shamia Pathological Specimenes 4 Care of Specimen 1. Pathological Specimen This is a living tissue taken from the diseased part or a part from an organ. The specimen should: 1.Not be crushed. 2.Not be lift dry. 3.Put in a proper container to be fully immersed in preservative solution. Usually formalin on a plastic container is used.

5 Ibrahim Shamia Pathological Specimenes 5 Care of Specimen Note: If frozen section biopsy is taken we should not put it in solution but take it immediately to laboratory.

6 Ibrahim Shamia Pathological Specimenes 6 Care of Specimen 2. Cultures:  Are obtained on sterile condition.  Tips of swap must not be contaminated by any other sources.  Should be refrigerated or sent to laboratory immediately.

7 Ibrahim Shamia Pathological Specimenes 7 Care of Specimen 3. Smear and Fluids: Should be taken to laboratory immediately. These may be placed on glass slides or drawn in to evacuation tube. Example: pus for gram stain or lymph node smears for electron microscope exam.

9 Ibrahim Shamia Pathological Specimenes 9 Care of Specimen  Amputated Parts:  Are sent to mortuary.  It is warped in cover with identification.  They are disposed as relatives wishes or religions beliefs.  A note containing description is sent to pathology lab.

10 Ibrahim Shamia Pathological Specimenes 10 Care of Specimen - Specimen Container: 1- Plastic bags. 2- Waxed cardboard cartons. 3- Glass jar with preservatives. - Each container is labeled with: 1. Name of patient. 2. Hospital number or medical record. 3. Room number.

11 Ibrahim Shamia Pathological Specimenes 11 Care of Specimen  Laboratory Request Includes: 1.Date of specimen taken. 2.Name of surgeon. 3.Pre- & post operative diagnosis. 4.Operative procedure. 5.Tissue to be examined. 6.Laboratory test the surgeon desires.
