Surviving when modern medicine fails
Who is dr. Scott Johnson? Why did he leave young living? Overly cautious vs. under cautious? Disclaimer Scott’s disclaimer on page 3 The INFORMATION IN THIS CLASS IS NOT INTENDED TO DIAGNOSE, TREAT, OR CURE. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE USING ANY NATURAL FORM OF HEALING. Dr. Scott Johnson is the author of Surviving When Modern Medicine Fails. He is the best selling author of 4 books and more than 250 article featured in online and print publications. He has a doctorate in naturopathy and is a board certified Alternative Medical Practitioner (AMP). His evidence based approach to natural healing and experience conducting medical research makes him a leading expert on essential oils. I had the privilege of meeting Scott in Hawaii when I won a trip through the Drive to Win Promotion. After getting to know him through the week and learning about his book, I purchased it on the way home! What I found nice is that it gave protocols, that used actual numbers…. Drops of oils… times per day. This has been so helpful to many of our team members that just do not know where to go with the oils! He was worked for Young Living and was teaching their Nature’s Remedy Classes, as well as traveling the world teaching and researching about essential oils! We also had the pleasure of hearing him speak at convention about essential oils and safety. Scott is more on the cautious side when it comes to essential oils. First of all, as we will talk about in a bit, his book is not Young Living specific. So he has to be cautious. Second of all, he does have a license on the line. And although he does come across as a bit overly cautious, he will tell you a lot of the things he is referring to it regarding people using very large amounts of essential oils. So don’t let this class scare you off in any way! Recently Scott decided to leave Young Living. After lots of prayer this is what he felt God was calling him to do. He still is available as a friend to ask essential oils questions, but will not answer Young Living product specific questions. He is one of the first people I look to when I need an honest answer for essential oils and really trust what he has to say! We are blessed to have met him, and have a friendship with him!

Surviving When Modern Medicine Fails
Have a long history of safe use dating back thousands of years. Have been successfully and safely used on infants, children, and adults. Contain dozens to hundreds of compounds in each oil, many which act as buffers or provide a protective and balancing effect to other compounds. Have been proven safe and effective in hundred of studies. So lets talk a little bit about the history of essential oils. 3. So often you will see studies that will say x compound in an essential oil maybe could cause something. But we want to look at the complete plan and what is really contained in each entire essential oil because that is going to give us a better idea of the safety of that oil. 4. And that includes orally ingesting them, applying them topically, and diffusing them.

What is frequency? the measurable rate of electrical energy flow that is constant between any two points and everything has frequency. Rose…320 MHZ Lavender MHZ Myrrh…………105 MHz Juniper ………98 MHz Sandalwood …96 MHz Peppermint …78 MHz Basil………52 MHz Helichrysum…181 MHz Melissa…102MHz Okay so stick with me on this because it will start to make sense, and it will help you understand why these oils work!! With that being said, we cannot fully understand how essential oils work without discussing frequency. Frequency is the measurable rate of electrical energy flow that is constant between any two points and everything has frequency. If you remember all the way back to grade school, all life, every single atom vibrates. Each kind of atom has its own vibratory motion that can actually be measured in hertz. So there are vibrational frequencies of essential oils too. That being so, it is easy to understand that the body also has a vibrational frequency and a person’s health condition can be determined by their frequency levels. In fact every cell in each organ and tissue has it’s own frequency. This is important to know….why? There are countless outside factors that can have an effect on our vibrational frequency. Disease and illness, emotional or physical stress all are problems when it comes to lowering our frequency, add in pollution, chemical overload, it seems clear why we struggle with our health. In 1992, Bruce Tainio determined that the average frequency of the human body during the day time is Hz (A healthy body frequency is Hz). When the frequency drops to 58 Hz cold and flu symptoms appear, at 55 Hz diseases like Candida take hold and at 52 Hz Epstein Bar and at 42 Hz cancer moves in. According to Dr. Rife, every disease has a frequency and that certain frequencies can prevent the development of disease and that others would destroy disease. Substances of a higher frequency will destroy diseases of a lower frequency. (ARE YOU STILL WITH ME?) So with that in mind know that many pollutants/toxins lower healthy frequency. What we eat, breath and absorb affect our bodies’ frequency. For example, processed/canned foods have a frequency of ZERO, fresh produce has up to 15 Hz, dry herbs from Hz, fresh herbs from Hz. Essential oils though START at 52 Hz and go as high as 320 Hz, which is the frequency of rose oil. Clinical research shows that essential oils have the highest frequency of any natural substance known to man, creating an environment in which disease, bacteria, virus, fungus, etc., CAN NOT LIVE!!! One way we can change these dysfunctional patterns is by countering with higher energy frequency substances including essential oils. Since each essential oil and each organ or tissue have their own frequencies, specific oils will be more useful to specific organs or tissues, supporting and enhancing these systems, as well as helping the body to assimilate. Essential oils with higher frequencies tend to influence emotions, and lower frequency oils have more effect on structural and physical changes, including cells, hormones, and bones as well as viruses, bacteria and fungi. “Clinical research shows that essential oils have the highest frequency of any natural substance known to man, creating an environment in which disease, bacteria, virus, fungus, etc., cannot live.” Essential oils are a natural way to restore your bodies healthy vibrational frequencies. Their constant subtle presence resonates with our body’s own electrical fields restoring health or at the very least giving us a real fighting chance.

The importance of purity and authenticity
Pure authentic oils are very potent, more concentrated then dried herbs. Powerful yet gentle remedies for infants through adults and pets too! Oil purity cannot be over stated! 98% of the essential oils on the market are used for the food and perfume industry. Unfortuneatly even those intended for aromatic, topic, and oral administration are frequently diluted or adultered. Unfortuneatly even those intended for aromatic, topic, and oral administration are frequently diluted or adultered. (by traders to increase profitability, control consistency, and create oils that smell better) A significant number of essential oils traders regularly taint their oils with cheaper-but similar- oils, isolated synthetic compounds, essential oils of similar species, or less expensive parts of the same plant. Example: Clove oil. Medicinal Clove oil should come from the bud of the clove plant, but the stem of the clove plant yields more oil. They smell the same, taste the same, look the same. No one would even know the difference unless they ran the oil through laboratory testing. Some common adulterations include: synthetic menthol added to peppermint oil, synthetic phenyl ethyl alcohol added to rose otto, adding lavadin to lavender, diluting citronella with lemongrass, or using cinnamon leaf instead of cinnamon bark. If an oil smells differently than the natural aroma of the plant, this is not a sign of purity, but rather an indication that the constituents in the oil have been adultered from what is found in nature. For example, some companies want their lavender to smell better, so after distilling the plant materials, they add a synthetic version of a compound that is naturally found in lavender called linalyl acetate. They doing this because adding more linalyl acetate improves the fragrance of the oil. This offers no improvement in the therapeutic value of the oil-in fact, quite the opposite, it augments the smell and places the natural constituents found in the oil out of balance. Another common adulteration is in Wintergreen oil. Wintergreen plants are naturally high in methyl salicylate-a compound similar to aspirin. Infact wintergreen plants often contain 95% methyl salicylate. However, many of the wintergreen oils found on the market contain 100% methyl salicylate… which is not possible in nature. The problem is even synthetic essential oils can produce quick short term fixes. But long term can be very harmful and even toxic, produce allergies, headaches, and chemical sensitivities.

To ensure you are using a pure oil look for:
Young Living’s Seed to Seal Process! A company that has expertise in the distillation process and innovative distillation equipment. A company that has published essential oil research in scientific journals and takes a clinical approach to essential oil development. A company that is personally involved in the farming and cultivation process, including inspecting partner farms. A company that verifies purity with their own laboratories, third-party testing facilities, and educated scientists to read and interpret test results. Oils that smell like natural plants. Young Living’s newest Sandalwood Farm in Hawaii! (Pg. 16 Surviving when Modern Medicine Fails) Young Living Does all of this! Scott Johnson did not write his book for Young Living. You will notice he does not use any Young Living Specific Oils in his books for this reason, and also is extra precautious in case his book were to get into the hands of someone using oils that are not pure. Yet, the things he tells you to look for all fit Young Living as a company! How cool?!

Usage and Safety Some guidelines to maximize effectiveness (pg. 17)
Apply at the first sign of a symptom or immediately after an injury Apply as often as every 5 minutes with severe injuries or where illness is progressing Apply 2 to 4 times daily if you catch the illness early Apply 1 to 3 times daily for chronic conditions Dilution and oral dosage guidelines can be found on pg 17-18 Apply oils based on body size- 6 to 15 drops per application for a large body, 5 to 10 drops for adolescents and teenagers, 1 to 5 drops for small children, and diluted to a 0.3% to 1% dilution ratio for infants and small children. In some cases half a drop for an infant for small child may be warranted. When they mention specific dosages they are referring these for the average size adult… so ADJUST ACCORDINGLY!

What are you waiting for?!
42 must have oils Scott Johnson writes about these 42 oils that can help you manage over 350 common health conditions. What are they? (Don’t worry we’ve made you a list!) Frankincense Geranium German chamomile Ginger Goldenrod Grapefruit Helichrysm Juniper Lavender Lemon Lemongrass Lime Marjoram melaleuca Myrrh Myrtle Nutmeg Orange Oregano Peppermint Pine Rosemary Sandalwood Spruce Thyme Tsuga Vetiver Wintergreen Ylang Balsam fir Basil Blue tansy Blue spruce Cedarwood Cinnamon bark Cistus Clary sage Clove Copiaba Cypress Eucalyptus fennel You are half way there! This list of oils can be found starting on page 26. The drug/oil interactions are also found here. Keeping in mind mostly when any interaction or sensitivity is mentioned it is talking about if the essential oil was used in large amounts. For instance, Scott writes to be cautious with fennel while pregnant/lactating. When someone asked him on his facebook why he would say this when fennel is mentioned to increase your milk supply, his answer was, “it can be harmful in very large amounts.” We use 1 to 2 drops at a time! What are you waiting for?!

Let’s talk safety… for scott’s sake…
Essential oils: Are very potent. Deserve respect. Should be used appropriately. Essential oils are very potent. For safety use less. Just because it is good… don’t add more. People don’t understand why YL says you can put essential oils on safely without diluting. Not all oils are the same. Some oils are not going to be as safe without dilution.

Surviving when modern medicine fails
No peppermint under age 5. No eucalyptus under age 5. No rosemary under age 5. No wintergreen under age 12. Use valor, Copaiba, lavender, frankincense, lemon, and myrtle instead. This is because the peppermint, and the menthol inside the peppermint, if they get a really big inhalation of it, you can actually cause some respiratory problems with that child. That is very rare, its about 1 in 10,000. You have to be cautious with eucyalyptus because it can overstimulate the cns of very young children and cause convulsions. Wintergreen is high is methyl salycitate, which is in aspirin. And you want to avoid aspirin in children. As little as 4 ml can be fatal to children. There is a reason there is a child proof cap on these. To protect your children. When someone has an adverse event you need to report It because it does get looked into. In the last year alone 3 children have taken wintergreen orally and it has been reported to the poison control center. These are extremely potent compounds. They are good… that’s what makes them great. They needed to be treated with respect. ½ a second, leaving the bottle open… the kid grabs it… and it can lead to respiratory distress. These are rare cases. And the respiratory distress occurs in less than 2 percent of children. But still, with children, why not be cautious.

Pregnancy and lactation Avoid anise, blue cypress, carrot, clove, fennel, hyssop, myrhh, oregano, rue, sage, tansy, tarragon, and wintergreen. Be cautious with lemongrass and Melissa. Focus on oils that are mild to the system and use smaller doses. Dilute with vegetable oils, v-6, olive oil, fractionated coconut oils. Oils classified as red or yellow… use caution. Green generally regarded as safe. Especially if you are new. And again, talk to your doctor or midwife.

Carrier oils (pg. 42) May reduce risk of skin sensitivity
Prolong the therapeutic effect -especially true for oils used for mood/emotions Vegetable oils (make up the bulk of carrier oils on the market -important to use unrefined, cold expeller pressed, or cold-pressed vegetable oil. Carrier oils contain fatty acids, fat soluble vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial nutrients. Olive oil is loaded with vitamin a, k and omega-3 and -6 fatty acids. Some carrier oils contain gamma linolenic acid (gla) which may stop cancer progression and is used to create prostaglandins (hormone like substances that are involved in many body processes, including immune system function). Average shelf life of a carrier oil: 6 months. It is advised to keep carrier oils in the fridge-with the exception of avocado oil- to preserve them. Read more about other common carrier oils and their benefits starting on page 44 of surviving when modern medicine fails -especially true for oils used for mood and emotions because it lengthens the time the aroma is available to the olfactory system If it doenst say unrefined, cold expeller pressed, or cold pressed on the label (even if it does say “pure”) it is likely a refined product extracted by high pressure, intense heat, and possibly solvents. Organic oils are also preferred to avoid exposure to toxic fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides. -The fatty acids contained in vegetable oils may help reduce cholesterol levels, strengthen cell membranes, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Carrier oils have an average shelf life of 6 months when kept in a cool dark place. Carrier oils are susceptible to oxidation and rancidity which can have detrimental effects on skin. -If you do refridgerate carrier oils if may bring the shelf life to 9 months. But keep in mind it will cause them to solidify and turn cloudy… so they will need to be removed to return to room temperature before use.

Surviving when modern medicine fails
Liver disorders One of the major things we look at are liver and kidneys. Anything we take in goes through the liver, through the skin…. The problem is the liver has its limits. Some peoples livers start not working as well. Oils when taken in body in any way… goes through the livers and kidneys. As we age our ability to clear through the kidneys decreases. So….. If we put more into an individual that does not compromise the liver function and kidney function… we are putting more burden on them. So be cautious. This is where the interactions with drugs come in. If I have someone who is compromised, I am looking at a heavy dilution right out front and build up from there. Don’t want to scare you… just want to educate. Kidney disorders Limit both oral and topical administration of essential oils, particularly cassia, cinnamon, thyme, oregano, clove, and fennel to reduce the risk of further injuring an already compromised liver. Limit both oral and topical administration of essential oils to reduce the risk of further injury to the kidneys.

Essential oils are not allergens… but can cause sensitivities….
Essential oils lack proteins and enzymes. Essential oils are made of carbon, hydrogen, and a little bit of oxygen sometimes from the plant. You can have a sensitivity/irritation to an essential oil Rather large amounts of oils are what makes an oil cause some reactions You can have irritation from some oils. To be overly cautious its best to follow the safety guide given to you with the starter kit. How to tell if an oils is causing a detoxification in your body or if you are having a sensitivity? Essential Oils Lack proteins and Ezymes, which are the common causes for an allergic reaction. Rather Large amounts of oils are what makes an oils cause some reactions- When the doctors, and scientists, and pharmacists, are working with the oils for testing and research, they are working with gallons of oils. Dr. Whooley explained at convention that sometimes they forget these gallons are oils and treat them as water, and do happen to find they oils will cause sensitivities in these large amounts. So please understand that when Scott Johnson is talking about the sensitivities to oils, he is talking about what would happen if the oils were used in greater amounts than we would normally have our hands on. But we still can be cautious by following the reccommendations for diluting and not diluting the oils. We, as Young Living distributors, have to tell you to start out diluting. But we will also tell you, that maybe we do not dilute our oils when used on ourselves and our families. In previous classes, I know I would say I felt that diluting oils was silly because you are literally diluting it. But after hearing from Dr. Whooly and Scott Johnson, we were taught that in some cases diluting oils to apply them topically will actually cause the oil to last longer on the skin! How to tell if an oils is causing a detoxification process or if you truly are having a sensitivity? If a reddened area or rash appears and lasts for more than a day it is most likely a sensitivity. That does not mean you can not take the oil orally that you may need. But back off topically for a few days. And take some of the antihistamine oils orally. Again, the sensitivities that have been noted are pretty rare, and the statistics are coming from people who are mostly using them in large amounts.
