4 MATH 151 Assessment Precalculus Spring 2007 Students who successfully complete this course will be able to: (a) Understand fundamental mathematical principles and concepts and use them to perform related mathematical computations. (b) Formulate problems, express problems symbolically, develop problem-solving strategies, and analyze solutions. (c) Apply mathematics appropriately to diverse problems. CriterionNo discernible progress towards meeting the criterion Some progress towards meeting the criterion Met the criterion (a) (b) (c)

5 To measure Criterion (a) Variations of the following problem: Use the Remainder Theorem to determine if (x + 1) is a factor of P(x)=x 203 +13. Explain your answer in one or two complete sentences. To measure Criterion (b) Variations of the following problem: A salesman drives from city A to city B, a distance of 90 miles, at a steady speed x. and arrives in less than one hour. He then increases his speed by 15 mi/h to drive the 125 miles from city B to city C. If the second leg of the trip took 10 more minutes than the first leg, how many hours did it take him to drive from A to B? To measure Criterion (c) Variations of the following problem: A culture starts with 8,000 bacteria and doubles every 40 minutes. a) Find a function that models the number of bacteria at time t. b) After how many minutes will there be 40,000 bacteria?
