THE DEVELOPMENT OF WEB-BASED CONTENT FOR E-LEARNING WITH THE INTEGRATION OF SIMULATION Dr. Teh Ying Wah Miss Sharina Azreen Salehhuddin University Of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Introduction Simulation is one of the most famous method used by educators, researchers, scientists and many other academicians in order to help them in their experiments, findings, researchers, to apply new theories into actions, and many more Simulation also is a fun way to get engaged with the subjects or courses as well as allowing learners to get involved in the risk-free environment

Types of Simulation Software Simulations This type of simulation will help the user to get used with the software by learning the step by step to use it Soft Skills Simulations Soft skill includes subject or discipline to be learned that does not require specialized background to practice. Hard Skills/Technical Simulations Hard Skills include subject or discipline to be learned that requires specialized background or training to practice

The survey Fifty random students from Malaysian local universities have been selected for the survey where they are among the diploma or degree holders Before answering the questions, the respondents have to go through two provided modules that present the content in text and graphic based (module 1a[1]) and simulation integrated content (module 1b[2]).[1][2] Twenty-seven questionnaires were returned and out of these 54% responses, 88.89% were degree holders. Most of our respondents are between 18-25 years old (88.89%), while the rest are from 26- 35 years old (11.11%)

Module 1 a Screenshot of module 1a In module 1a,respondents were introduced to the firewall concept and basic explanation. Along with the explanation is a static picture that show the basic process of firewall

Module 1 b Screenshot of module 1b In module 1b, respondents were introduced to the firewall concept and basic explanation. Along with the explanation is a simple simulation that show the basic process of firewall. This type of simulation fall under soft- skill simulation because as mention above, soft skill includes subject or discipline to be learned that does not require specialized background to practice

Objective of the survey Problems in current web-based content for e-learning from the students view The solution to overcome the problems ( measured in the quality and cost )

Text and based versus Simulation integrated content One of the weaknesses to deliver information and the content to the student is the module provided. The quality of the module reflect the whole e- learning system overall because that is mainly why we develop the e-learning system generally; is to deliver the content to the learner anytime and anywhere effectively Therefore, we have to present the modules and the content in such way that the learners will continuously to feel motivated during the courses

Text and based versus Simulation integrated content Can text and graphic alone helps to achieve this objective which to motivate the learners to engage more with the subject Responses Module 1a: Percentage of agree Module 1b: Percentage of agree This module helps you to understand the topic better 44.44 %88.89% The content of the module is clear and interesting 33.33%88.89% This module motivates me to read/learn more 33.33%88.89%

The cost and the quality of e- learning In education, we could see how the technology evolved and play it parts in order to smoothen out the learning processes According to Salamon, Perkins & Globerson, 1991, a technology is something that can undertake significant cognitive processing in behalf of the user A lot of stuff must be considered when we run e- learning on the network especially to distribute the e- learning content The big three when it comes to a project are cost, quality and speed.

The cost and the quality of e- learning We also asked the respondents on the importance of the quality and the cost of the e-learning. The results for both statements we stated in the survey are shown. The respondents choose the following as the best content and cost to spend. AnswerPercentage Module 1 a ( graphic and text based ) with less spending for building and learning cost. (l1) 11.11% Module 1 b ( simulation integrated with graphic and text ) with higher spending on building and learning cost. (l2) 88.89%

Dynamic content in asynchronous learning Learning process is very important to build up constructivism. In psychology there are several guiding principles of constructivism (Jacqueline and Martin Brooks) Learning is a search for meaning. Meaning requires understanding wholes as well as parts In order to teach well, we must understand the mental models that students use to perceive the world and the assumptions they make to support those models. The purpose of learning is for an individual to construct his or her own meaning, not just memorize the right answers and regurgitate someone else's meaning

Dynamic content in asynchronous learning Asynchronous interaction involves the parties communicating over elapsed time, not real time, usually in a typewritten format Since most of the e-learners can choose their own desirable time to study, they can concentrate much better and at the same time enjoying the dynamic web content to assist them. This is agreed by 88.89% respondents.

Conclusion A longer-term learning program could be designed as follows The text and graphic based on introductory session. Simple text and graphic based exercise Simulation session confirming expectations and deliverables, with a simple exercise. Main body of work where learners research using text and based presentation, in order to gain a common level of knowledge and understanding. Periodic simulation content is being used to motivate the participants and allow them to try and practice their skill or their understanding on that subject The explanation of the subject will be done in text and based presentation.

Conclusion Problems in current web-based content for e-learning from the students view Quality 1. To create module that may helps the students to understand the topic better 2. To create module that is clear and interesting 3. To create module that may helps to motivate the student to read/learn more Cost 1. Developing a dynamic content module (simulation integrated/interactivity will increase the cost to implement e-learning system.

Conclusion The solution to overcome the problems (measured in the quality and cost) Quality over cost - by choosing simulation integrated with graphic and text as the web content for e-learning with higher spending on building and learning cost.
