2  These are substitutes for nouns  Examples:  Barack Obama delivered an acceptance speech in Chicago when he was chosen as the democratic nominee.  I hope that you will enjoy English class and learn a lot from it.

3 Personal pronouns  1 st person – I, me, we, us, our  2 nd person – you, your  3 rd person – he, she, him, her, they, them  FYI – when writing an essay – only 3 rd person should be used.  1 st and 2 nd person are not acceptable.

4 Examples of personal pronouns  I went to the store to buy milk.  Jamie and her best friend went to the movies.  Barry and he took horseback riding lessons together.

5 Indefinite pronouns Singular – another, anybody, anyone, anything, one, each, either, everyone, everybody, everything, neither, nobody, no one, someone, somebody Plural – both, many, few, several Singular or plural – all, some, none, most, any

6 Examples of indefinite  Some of the cookies were gone.  Anyone can learn to skate.  Somebody stole my Ipod.

7 Other types  Demonstrative pronouns – this, that, these, those  Interrogative pronouns – who, whose, whom, which, what  Relative pronouns- who, whose, whom, which, that

8 Examples  This is my favorite dessert.  These are my shoes.  Who is going to the show?

9 Practice  1. Everyone in her family likes to go hunting, but few enjoy the outdoors more than I do.  2. Last fall several of my brothers and I stayed at a camp near Brainerd, which was not far from our hometown.  3. While there we learned how to build a perch in a tree and how to keep it maintained.

10  4. A group of us even went beyond that - we learned to butcher a deer.  5. One of my brothers showed those who were interested how to cook over an open fire.  6. Everyone ate everything in sight.
