Jennifer Worden Harvard Graduate School of Education January 24, 2011 Questions and MBE

Remember September… Learning Differences Learning & Teaching Gender Differences Brains and Schools/Classrooms Brains Emotion Assessment MBE & Translation/Communication

Let’s look at some specific examples I view intelligence as many cognitive abilities/processes where we have different strengths/weaknesses. Are these abilities plastic? If so, can we improve these abilities and should we incorporate this in the classroom? I’d like to look further at the way culture influences cognitive development, how language influences cognitive development, and how this information can be used in the classroom. What are some alternative models of schools that might complement MBE research?

Some questions our through-lines will address Language and Literacy How can MBE inform creating pedagogical strategies for heterogeneous student populations? Numeracy How can we create brain-based interventions to be applied to the classroom? Emotional Development How does emotion regulate our ability to learn? Conceptual Change How does one get better at translating neuroscientific findings so the general public can make use of them?

Refining our questions to create usable knowledge Are there age-specific gender differences in the way that children and adolescents learn math and science concepts?
