Vocabulary Scale Drawing/Scale Model – Used to represent an object that is too large or too small to be drawn or built at actual size Scale – Determined by the ratio of a given length on the drawing or model to its corresponding length on the actual object.

Notes The lengths and widths of objects on a scale drawing or model are proportional to the lengths and widths of the actual object Examples of Scales: ◦1 in = 3 ft 1 inch represents an actual distance of 3 feet ◦1 cm = 2mm 1 cm represents an actual distance of 2 mm Scales are written so that a unit length on the model is listed first.

Example 1 Determine the Scale

Example 2 Determine the Scale

Example 3 – Your Turn Determine the Scale A model car is 4 inches long. The actual car is 12 feet long. What is the scale of the model?

Example 4 – Your Turn Determine the Scale Joanna knows the distance to her grandmother’s house is 21 miles. On a map, the distance is 5.25 inches. What is the scale of the map?
