To be successful today, YOU need: pen/pencil, Do Now half sheet, notes sheet, chromebook YOU HAVE 3 MINUTES TO GET YOUR MATERIALS and FIND YOUR SEAT!! EXPECTATIONS for Do Now: Sitting in YOUR assigned seat… SILENTLY and INDEPENDENTLY… COMPLETE your Do Now… We have 16 days to the EOG - What POSITIVE choices can YOU make today??

Water Consumption Why care about water? Water Crisis Why is the U.S.’s water consumption not sustainable?

Water Conservation Stewardship - Taking actions to protect resources Conservation - Saving and using only the resources that we need When you save water, you are being a good steward of Earth’s resources.

Using just what we need Check for leaks in pipes Take shorter showers Turn off the water when brushing your teeth Only do laundry when you have a full load

Aquifers One way to get fresh water is in aquifers. Aquifers are underground reservoirs that hold fresh water. The rock layers allow for filtration of pollutants.

Acidification Burning fossil fuels → CO2 in atmosphere → absorbed by the oceans → drastically affects aquatic ecosystems ●Carbon sink: The capture and storage of carbon

Absorption dependent on temperature and salinity ● Increase temp (due to CO2 emissions) = Decrease CO2 absorption = more in atmosphere ●Increase salinity (due to higher temperatures and water evaporation) = Decrease CO2 absorption = more in atmosphere ●More CO2 in ocean = more H+ ions = more acidic = damage to aquatic ecosystems I

Sources of Pollution Type of Pollution DefinitionExamples Point-source Non-point- source Comes from one place (Direct) 1. Factories 2. Sewage Comes from many places (Indirect) 1.Runs-off ( streets and farms) 2. Acidic rain

Non-PointPoint

Point Source Pollution Pollution from ONE identifiable source You can draw a line connecting exactly where the pollution started Easy to monitor and regulate

Non-Point Source Pollution Pollution from many sources Source is not easily identified Harder to control and regulate Example: runoff from farms, streets
