6 Important Facts It was The Battle That Turned the Tide of the Pacific War It was a naval and aircraft battle of World War II Land and carrier-based American planes decisively defeated a Japanese fleet on its way to invade the Midway Islands American commanders; Chester W. Nimitz, Frank J. Flecher, Raymond A. Spruance. Japanese commanders ; Yamaoto Isoroku, Kondo Nobutake, Nagumo Chichi. Admiral Nimitz had broken the Japanese code so we knew when and were the Japanese would come yet they did not know we knew. Thus, after they bombed the island, when their planes were sitting on their decks being refueled and reloaded, US planes found them and attacked. It ended Japan's power over the U.S. The balance of sea power in the Pacific shifted from the Japan to equity between America and Japan, and soon after the U.S. and their allies took sole control of the waters in the mid Pacific.
