18. Rumble Stripe Noise Considerations Admittedly, noise levels near the roadway can sometimes be objectionable. However, the lives that can be saved by rumble stripes must be balanced against this drawback. According to a 2007 study, 13% of the peak rumble stripe noise levels were above the highest noise level measured for a commercial vehicle driving along the roadway (not hitting the rumble stripes) 3

FHWA Guidance FHWA recommends and provides funding for the following INDOT safety programs: Centerline rumble stripes system-wide on undivided rural roads with posted speeds of 50 mph or greater (where the sum of the lane and shoulder width for each travel direction is at least 14 feet) 2 Edge line or shoulder rumble stripes system-wide on rural highways with posted or statutory speeds of 50 mph or greater 2
