Chapter 8 What did the pharaohs of ancient Egypt accomplish, and how did they do it?

2 Ancient Egypt Three periods of stability: Old Kingdom Middle Kingdom
New Kingdom

3 Old Kingdom 2700 – 2200 B.C.E. Early pharaohs set up a strong central government. Built great pyramids.

4 Middle Kingdom 2000 – 1800 B.C.E. Period of Reunification because it followed chaos and disunity. Many great achievements in literature, art, and architecture.

5 New Kingdom 1600 – 1100 B.C.E. Egypt’s Golden Age. Peace and Stability
Egypt was very powerful. Trade Building Monuments.

6 Pharaoh Khufu “The Pyramid Builder”
Reigned during the Old Kingdom Ruled from 2551 – 2528 B.C.E. Builder of the Great Pyramid at Giza. Took 20 years to build and over 2 million stone blocks. Organized a central government.

7 Pharaoh Senusret I: “Patron of the Arts”
Reigned during the Middle Kingdom. Ruled from 1971 – 1926 B.C.E. Ruled a stable and unified Egypt. Encouraged art and Literature Built White Chapel made of alabaster, gold, and covered in artwork.

8 Pharaoh Hatshepsut: “Promoter of Trade”
Reigned during the New Kingdom. Ruled from 1473 – 1458 B.C.E. First Female Ruler. Traded with the kindom of Punt. Posed as a male, wore beard, wore men’s clothes. Built Dayr al-Bahri

9 Pharaoh Ramses II: “Military Leader & Master Builder”
Also reigned during New Kingdom. He ruled from 1290 to 1224 B.C.E. Called Ramses the Great. He reigned for more than 60 years. Best known for military leadership and building monuments. Signed the world’s first peace treaty. Built temple at Abu Simbel.
