6 Hemingway was one Macho Dude But he held a deep secret. Until the age of 6, he was raised as a girl, not as a boy. See, his mother desperately wanted to have twin girls, so he dressed Hemingway as a girl to match his older sister. His mother called him “Ernestine.” She even held his sister back in school so they could appear as twins!

10 Where could he be masculine? Michigan During the summer, Ernest Hemingway’s dad would bring him to Michigan. There, he could dress and act as a boy. One could say he became overly masculine in Michigan, to compensate for being dressed as a girl, and this is evident in the story “Up in Michigan.”
