1 The Nazi rise to power 1924 to November 1932

2 Aims of the lesson By the end of this lesson you will
Understand how and why Hitler was in a position to come to power by 1932 Evaluate the reasons why Nazi support rose in the years up to 1932 Evaluate the effect that the great depression had on Nazi support in the late 1920s and early 1930s

3 After the Munich Putsch
Hitler was released from prison in December 1924 and the party was un-banned Published “Mein Kampf” in 1925 – immediately became a best seller Hitler established himself as the undisputed leader of the party – people such as Roehm and Hess were put in their place

4 The new path After his release from prison Hitler realised that he could not cease power by force He needed to build up support for the party in elections so that he could use this to destroy the republic

5 1924 to Going nowhere Stresemann in charge – Germany was doing well and Nazi ideas did not appeal Nazis needed a crisis in order to gain support May 1924 – 32 seats December 1924 – 14 seats Autumn 1928 – 12 seats

6 1924 to 1928 – signs of hope Hitler was now firmly established as the leader of the party – one direction Hitler youth and women's sections established The SA was organised as the party’s armed thugs 1925 – members 1928 – members Still a long way off power

7 The great depression 1929 1929 – Wall Street Crash
World economy in crisis – Germany suffered more than most due to her reliance on American loans The government could do little to stop this happening People lost faith in the government and democracy Began to turn to Hitler

8 Nazi solutions to the depression
Jobs for all men – created through public works Help for employers to help to raise profits Protection for shopkeepers and farmers Make Germany great again Jews and Communists to blame for Germany’s problems Simple solutions to complex problems

9 Nazi organisation 1929 to 1932 The Nazi Party were well organised and held mass rallies Hitler seen as being a strong man – a saviour “Hitler over Germany” – travelled by plane to spread his message Goebbels put in charge of propaganda – very successful

10 The role of the SA Hitler’s violent thugs
Beat up opponents and disrupted their meetings Made it difficult to oppose the Nazis Led by Ernst Roehm – ex friekorps Appealed to the unemployed who had lost faith in the government

11 Electoral success 1929 to 1932 Nazi propaganda was very effective and successful 1928 – 12 seats 1930 – 107 seats. 2nd biggest party in the Reichstag July 1932 – 230 seats. The biggest party in the Reichstag By 1932 nothing could be done without the Nazis who would not cooperate unless Hitler was appointed Chancellor

12 April 1932 Presidential election
Hitler vs Hindenburg Hindenburg – 19m votes Hitler – 13m votes Relatively close – a good performance by the Nazis Double Ludendorf’s vote in 1925 election Hitler demanded the Chancellorship

13 November 1932 – a setback! Nazi vote dropped to 196 seats but still the biggest party People has got sick of the Nazis violent tactics and their blocking tactics in the Reichstag Has they “shot their bolt”? Hitler demanded the Chancellorship but needed to act quickly as his support was slipping
