2 HOUSING: PEASANT/SERF A Peasant’s House  Made from wood and stone—wattle and daub  Roof made from thatch  Part of the house would be for animals  House would be outside of the castle/manor, in the fields

3 HOUSING: KING/QUEEN, LORDS/LADIES, CHURCH LEADERS  King/Queen would have a castle with many peasants working for them  A Lord/Lady would have a Manor, like a castle but smaller  A Pope would have a cathedral but a priest would live like a peasant

4 MEDIEVAL DIET: PEASANT Typical Diet Sample One:  2 cups beans  2 whole wheat bread  3 pints ale  4 cups turnips(4000 calories) Typical Diet Sample Two:  2 cups beans  3 whole eggs  3 cups oats (porridge)  3 pints ale  8 ounces cheese (3500 calories)

5 MEDIEVAL DIET: KING/NOBLES Hunting was a privilege of the lords so they had access to meat! Duck Chicken Goose Pork Turkey Rabbit Fish  Beef

6 MEDIEVAL CLOTHING: DEPENDED ON YOUR PLACE IN THE FEUDAL PYRAMID Kings/Queens, Noblemen/Noblewomen  Colourful clothes  Headresses, belts, sashes  Jewellery and a variety of footwear  Various materials  Linen  Silk  Wool

7 MEDIEVAL CLOTHING: DEPENDED ON YOUR PLACE IN THE FEUDAL PYRAMID Peasants/Serfs would have one set of clothes  For work  Made of wool (not dyed) Specialized clothing: Monk, Nuns, Doctors, Tradesmen, Knights

8 ENTERTAINMENT IN THE MIDDLE AGES: ALSO DEPENDED ON YOUR PLACE IN FEUDAL SOCIETY In the castle:  Entertainers (jesters, jugglers, storytellers)  Chess, checkers, backgammon, dice, cards  Indoor games and activities  Music and dancing Peasants/village dwellers:  Played outdoor games (stickball, soccer)  Foot races, tag, hide and seek  Cards Knights  Jousts and tournaments  Feats of strength

10 FAMILY IN MEDIEVAL WESTERN EUROPE A Peasant Family:  Father and Mother  Worked on all the jobs together  Children—many (no birth control)  Started working on the farm at age 7  Were married off at age 10  Were the property of the Lord A Noble Family:  Father and Mother  Father looked after all money  Mother entertained and looked after children  Children—boys were preferred  Were sent to study with church/nobles at age 7  Promised to be married at age 10
