1 Section TEMPERATURE DEPENDS ON PARTICLE MOVEMENT 4
Section TEMPERATURE DEPENDS ON PARTICLE MOVEMENT Reading Study Guide BIG IDEA Heat is a flow of energy due to temperature differences. KEY CONCEPT Temperature depends on particle movement. Review Kinetic energy is the energy of motion.

2 All matter is made of moving particles
Take Notes All matter is made of moving particles 1. Fill in the main idea web for the main idea shown. Liquids: Particles move more freely than those in a solid; constantly sliding past each other as they move. Gases: Particles are far apart and move at high speeds All matter is made of moving particles Solids: Particles are not free to move around very much; vibrate back and forth in the same position; held tightly together by forces of attraction

3 2. Which two objects contain particles that move the least
2. Which two objects contain particles that move the least? Explain how you know. The apple and the plate contain particles that move the least. I know this because the particles in a solid are the most tightly packed.

4 A-B. Temperature and Kinetic Energy
3. Fill in the magnet word diagram with phrases and examples that describe temperature. Measure of the average kinetic energy of all particles in an object Temperature depends on mass and speed of the particles in an object. Particles in hot objects move faster than particles in cooler objects As kinetic energy increases, temperature increases TEMPERATURE

5 II. Temperature can be measured.
4. Why might it be important to know what temperature scale is being used in a given situation? There is a big difference between 98.6 ºF (normal body temperature) and 98.6ºC (water boils at 100ºC).

6 A. Temperature Scales MAIN IDEA DETAIL NOTES
5. Fill in the combination notes for the main idea shown. MAIN IDEA DETAIL NOTES Temperature is measured in units. The Fahrenheit scale is used widely in the United States. The Celsius scale is used around the world and in science. A. Degrees are equally spaced units between two points. A. Water freezes at 32ºF and boils at 212ºF. B. Named after Gabriel Fahrenheit A. Developed by Anders Celsius. B. Water freezes at 0º C and boils at 100º C.

7 B. Thermometers and Thermal Expansion
6. What is thermal expansion? How do liquid-filled thermometers measure temperature based on thermal expansion? Thermal expansion is a property that allows some materials to expand when their temperature increases. In a liquid-filled thermometer, a liquid inside of the thermometer expands and rises when it is heated.
