Engineering Physics 4P03/6P03 Nuclear Power Plant Systems & Operation Hello! My name is Ben Rouben. I am the instructor for this course. For those who don’t know me: I worked in reactor physics at AECL from 1975 to 2007. I was Manager of the Reactor Core Physics Branch, 1993-2005. Right now I am Reactor-Physics Consultant and Adjunct Professor at McMaster and at UOIT.

E-mail Addresses To communicate with me, you may use either e- mail address below: roubenb@mcmaster.ca roubenb@alum.mit.edu Teaching Assistant: Jason Sharpe, sharpejr@mcmaster.casharpejr@mcmaster.ca

Course Webpage The course webpage is http://www.nuceng.ca/br_space/2015- 01_4p03_6p03/ep_p03_home.htm

Objectives of Course Objectives of course: To learn The principles of nuclear unit operation and control The functions, equipment and operation of the main process systems How the systems are controlled How to conduct operations on a CANDU-9 simulator cont’d

Simulator Exercises To learn how to conduct normal and abnormal operations, e.g.: Power maneuvers Poison override Recovery from a reactor trip or a turbine trip Responses to reactor, heat-transport, steam and feedwater system malfunctions

Self-Study, Multimedia Format The course material is in a multimedia format designed for distance education: Self-study using CD-ROM and computer Get Course Pack from McMaster Bookstore: Cost is ~$29.95 for the main notes + CD ~$15 for the resource book (containing assignments and other support material), and ~$15 for reference text. Resource book & reference text are on the CD, but you would have to print them off!  I recommend you buy all 3 parts (~$65). Ask for the CD at the checkout.

Course Map The course is organized into chapters and modules: Chapter 1: Overall Unit Chapter 2: Reactor and Moderator Chapter 3: Reactor Regulating System Chapter 4: Heat Transport Chapter 5: Steam, Turbine & Feedwater

Schedule All classes at McMaster U Starts 2015 January 6 Nominally 2 classes/week, room JHE-329: Tuesday 8:30 - 10:20 & Friday 8:30 - 9:20 But this is mostly a self-study course!  We will meet once a week (day may vary and will be specified ahead of time). First class will be on Tuesday Jan. 6 cont’d

Schedule (cont’d) My office hours: Any time by e-mail, or For an hour after class on the day of the week on which we meet, JHE-327 A Term recess is scheduled for week of Feb 16-20 Date of mid-term examination will be discussed; tentatively scheduled for Feb. 10 or Feb. 24. Final examination date not yet known.

Marks Overall marks for the course: Weekly Assignments: 25%, broken down as Review Questions: 4% Problem Sets: 9% Simulator Problems:12% (except when there are no problem sets or no simulator problems – to be determined) Project: 15% Mid-Term Examination:20% Final Written Examination:40% 6P03 students will have to do an extra assignment, worth 20%. Cont’d

Marks (cont’d) Note: Weekly Assignments must be handed in promptly on time, every week! To be handed in to TA electronically by 8:00 am on the day of the week on which we will meet (or earlier), either by e-mail or in drop box outside EP office. Week-1 assignment due Tuesday Jan 13, 8:00 am. Etc. In week 1 there are no simulator problems. Therefore for week 1 marks will be 8% for review questions, 17% for Problem set.

Mid-Term & Final Mid-term: Nominally 2 hours Closed book, but 1 single-sided 8.5”x11” crib sheet may be allowed (I will confirm before midterm). Final: 3 hours Closed book; 1 double-sided crib sheet may be allowed (will confirm).
