DB2 z/OS can integrate insights from big data sources to augment analysis (e.g. improve accuracy of fraud detection with “nuggets” from social media)
vStorm Enterprise nicely complements capabilities provided by IBM’s BigInsights today. When analyzing data that originates completely on z/OS – such as VSAM files or logs – it allows Hadoop to be used to generate insights without having to ever take that data off-platform.
Claims Response Time
It’s also very useful for scenarios where most of the data originates on z/OS but augmenting that data with information from outside sources can improve results. Consider health insurance, a very competitive industry where many health plan providers want to improve customer service by reducing the response time for processing claims. Aside from the claims processing system itself, likely using a relational database to store claim details, there are a number of other business systems that play a part in servicing the claim. For example, if a claimant had searched for information from a self-service web portal, weblogs would identify browsing patterns and the type of information that was sought. If a call center had been contacted, logs would provide the times and numbers of calls made as well as the call center agent’s notes. There is a fair amount of digital data surrounding the claims system that could be useful in analyzing how the claims process is performing.
Combining relational and machine data, and analyzing in aggregate, provides the best opportunity for matching actual results to business metrics, and helps improve the end-to-end process by identifying where claimants might be struggling to find information. Logs are as sensitive as client data, so keeping all relevant data on the mainframe for analysis via an on-platform Hadoop cluster is the most secure option.
Fraud Detection
In many cases, raw external data will be far too large to justify moving it into System z to process. Think about social data such as Twitter feeds, where the information that you really need is just a tiny fraction of the huge source. For these situations, DB2 z/OS has the ability to connect with IBM’s BigInsights Hadoop implementation, have it pre-process all that data to extract the desired insights, then integrate these nuggets of valuable information back into DB2 for analysis.
Think about fraud, which is a huge problem for any organization that makes payments: banks (stolen card information), property and casualty insurers (staged accidents), health plan providers (excessive billing) and government tax agencies (ineligible deductions) are just a few examples where fraudulent payments are authorized every day.
For many mainframe clients, payment systems data is maintained in relational databases. However, it’s not always the case that all data required to make a determination of fraud exist in relational data. A lot can be learned about a payment requestor from social media, police records, and other public files. When payment data is held in relational databases, results can be improved by augmenting that data with insights derived from non-mainframe sources.

Most DB2 Regional User Groups are a no charge option or pretty close to free when compared to other options. IBM supports this community by routing many DB2 specialist around the world to deliver short presentation and sometimes a full day seminar.
There are a whole lot of YouTube videos containing multiple DB2 topics with various durations. More and more DB2 11 topics will be surfacing in the rollout and adoption of the new release.
IBM has a special series for DB2 for z/OS Best Practice videos anchored in These videos are also available in YouTube and there are already many DB2 11 topics available. More and more will be surfacing over time.
IDUG has many Technical Talk videos available with many DB2 11 topics already posted. IDUG also have a Content Library loaded with educational material available for download. Most recently they have added Sheryl Larsen’s Advanced SQL Coding and Tuning seminars (updates through DB2 10). These .ppt files can be used as a great start point for updating developers SQL skills that have not had any training many years.
