5 NIH Intramural SIP Eight+ week research experience at all levels  High School  College (including the CCSEP)  Medical/Dental  Graduate (MS, MPH, PhD, PharmD, PsyD, etc) Opportunities on all NIH campuses; paid and volunteer opportunities available Many workshops, journal clubs, and educational opportunities Access to pre-graduate/pre-professional advising and career counseling End-of-summer poster session

6 NIH Intramural Postbac Programs Paid internships in an NIH intramural research group  Across many disciplines  One or two years Two programs:  Within two years of graduation: Postbac IRTA Program  After two years: Technical IRTA Program All NIH postbacs are eligible to participate in the NIH Academy Health Disparities Training Program Many workshops, journal clubs, and educational opportunities Access to pre-graduate/pre-professional advising and career counseling End-of-year poster session

7 The Selection Process (SIP and Postbac)  Apply on-line  NIH Investigators (PIs) or their surrogates search the application database  Typically by keyword  Some gate with a minimum GPA  Contact with PIs is critical  Search NIH ANNUAL REPORTS by keyword  Send science-focused personalized emails (NED)  Interviews are by phone or in person  Offers can be made anytime  Most summer interns starts in May/June  Most postbacs start in July - August

8 The Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) Provides up to $20,000/yr to cover educational expenses for undergraduates Eligibility:  U.S. citizen or permanent resident  GPA ≥ 3.3  Extreme financial need  Major in a field relevant to biomedical research All UGSP Scholars  Participate in SIP the year following the scholarship year  must work in the NIH IRP for one year in return for each scholarship year

9 UGSP Application Details On-line application at www.training.nih.govwww.training.nih.gov Application differs substantially from SIP and postbac applications Financial aid office must verify financial need before deadline for consideration A central committee screens completed applications, interviews finalists by phone, and selects scholars Scholars visit NIH for lab placement and interviews with NIH Pis

10 Graduate Partnership Program  Allows Ph.D. and combined degree students to do all or part of their dissertation research in the NIH IRP  Many workshops and educational programs including new Translational Medicine Training Program  Potential expansion of NIH Academy to include graduate students in 2013  Students can apply through one of two pathways:  Individual agreement pathway  Institutional agreement pathway

11 NIH Postdoc Basics Eligibility: < 5 years of relevant research experience since receipt of the doctoral degree Appointment for up to 5 years; may be promoted to Research Fellow for up to 3 additional years International postdocs are funded as Postdoc-Visiting Fellows and come to NIH on the J1 visa program First year stipend: $44,000 - $50,400 $10,000 supplements for some specialties (chemistry, engineering, math) Health insurance provided: individual or family

15 Assumptions Underlying Our Efforts Trainees must know and use resources  Orientation programs, handbook, moving guide Implicit rules and expectations must be made explicit  Orientation program, goal setting, and progress reports Trainees need excellent mentorship in and out of the research environment Students must develop an awareness of their strengths and developmental needs; learning, communication, conflict, and assertiveness style; motivations and inner-drivers  Support services, including mental health and counseling, must be available and regularly discussed  Mentor training can have a big impact
