Philosophy/Procedures High standards yield high results: Preparing your student for IB/AP is the goal “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” – Einstein Multi-Domain Approach Organization -- The key to high school success! Online grades/Website: updated frequently Binder with supplies: no materials=tardy Calendar and wall pockets for absent work

Policies Late work – Not accepted, except for absences (in accordance with stated school/district policies) Note: Long-term assignments are due on the due date, regardless of attendance. Excused Absence – 2/1 ratio (see handbook) Tutorial Homework – Will be given only to enhance or enforce concepts already taught, not as a substitute for instruction or as “busy work”; however, much of the reading in Honors is completed at home. Grades – standard scale; I “round up” at.5 Plagiarism: stealing work or IDEAS; Ethics Policy Violation and a ZERO will result; student will not receive a recommendation to continue in the honors program.

Curriculum – CCSS aligned Literary Terms; Grammar Short Stories Poetry Journal Writing: Students write 2-4 times a week in their Writer’s Journal Essays, Presentations, & Speeches Response to Literature (analyze theme, characters, literary devices, etc.) Persuasive/Argument – including rhetoric Creative Writing - including Personal Narrative & Descriptive

Novels/Plays The House on Mango Street To Kill a Mockingbird The Odyssey Romeo & Juliet Fahrenheit 451 Anthem A Separate Peace (?) Secret Life of Bees (?) Texts are selected from the IB Reading List.

What YOU Can Do Check planner for daily work & HW Check website for updates/due dates/project guidelines/handouts (not nightly HW) Purchase novel(s), if possible Provide a quiet place dedicated to school work Remind 101 Encourage your student to email me with concerns & questions belfieldm@svusd.org
