Naming Covalent Compounds
2
Covalent (organic) compounds Remember ionic compounds are made from a metal and a non metal Covalent compounds: when two or more non metals come together
3
Naming covalent compounds We need to use prefixes in front of the words NUMBERPREFIX 1 (only on second atom)MONO 2DI 3TRI 4TETRA 5PENTA 6HEXA 7HEPTA 8OCTA 9NONA 10DECA
4
How do we name covalent compounds? * we don’t need to worry about charges!!!! Step 1: Name the compound like you would for an ionic compound Step 2: Insert prefixes in front of the words to indicate the number of each of the atoms Eg. N 2 O 6 Nitrogen oxide Insert prefix
5
How do we name covalent compounds? * we don’t need to worry about charges!!!! Step 1: Name the compound like you would for an ionic compound Step 2: Insert prefixes in front of the words to indicate the number of each of the atoms Eg. N 2 O 6 Nitrogen oxide Insert prefix Dinitrogen Hexaoxide
6
Writing out the formula for covalent compounds? * we don’t need to worry about charges!!!! Step 1: write out the atom symbols Step 2: Write in the number in the prefix after the symbol to show how many of each atom there is. Eg Triposphorous pentaiodide P 3 I 5
