2  Work with a partner and complete the problem handed out to you regarding the prices of tennis racquets. › Recall what we learned in the previous lesson when calculating percents of a whole number.

3  When an item is on sale for 20% off, we say that there is a discount of 20%  A discount of 20% on an item for sale means that you pay: › 100% - 20% = 80% of the regular price. Example  A video game is marked with a discount of 30%. Its regular price is $27.99. What is the price after the discount? › The sale price of the video game is: 100% - 30% = 70% of $27.99 › 70% of $27.99 = 0.7 x $27.99 = $19.59

4 Example  A video game is marked with a discount of 30%. Its regular price is $27.99. What is the price after the discount? › 70% of $27.99 = 0.7 x $27.99 = $19.59  This is the price ($19.59) before sales tax is added. The Harmonized sales tax (HST) is 13% (provincial – 8%, federal – 5%).  So, the price you pay for the video game is: › $19.59 + 13% of $19.59 › = 113% of $19.59 › = 1.13 x $19.59 › = $22.14

5  Many salespeople earn commission, which is a percent of the money received from the sale of the item. Example  Mac Jennings, a real estate agent, sells a home for $219 000. He earns 2.5% commission. How much does Mac earn on this sale? › Mac will earn 2.5% of $219 000. › 0.025 x $219 000 = $5475
