Contact with Asia improved life for Europeans but it also had a disastrous effect. In 1348, ships returning to Europe from the eastern Mediterranean brought back the Bubonic plague known as the Black Death. As many as one to two cases of the plague are discovered in Arizona every year. The first victims in Europe were Italian sailors who developed swellings on their bodies. They turned black and blue all over, then died within a few hours. From Italy, the Black Death spread across all of Western Europe. In all, the plague killed more than one third the population of Europe, an estimated 25 million people.

The Bubonic plague struck Western Europe several times during the Late Middle Ages. The worst outbreak occurred during the mid-1300’s, the direct result of trade with the Middle East. The plague had already swept through much of Asia. The plague helped to weaken serfdom. In the chaos of the times, serfs fled without fear that anyone would capture them. Workers became so scarce that the serfs who remained began to demand higher wages.
