Mineral Stations Lab Corrections
2
Please do not do again: Messing with the microscope –Keep changing the focus –Blowing off the salt on the microscope Cereal boxes ruined –Writing/check marks –Pictures defaced –Holes poked into box Honey Bunches of Oats –Writing/check marks –Inappropriate writing
3
Please do not do again: Purdue Chicken –Inappropriate writing Mica –Totally shredded into 100’s of pieces Streak Test –How do you do it? One straight try It is not 2 sticks being rubbed together to try and start a fire! Do not try it in your hand – on table or counter! Station Rotation- follow directions! (11 th only)
4
Station 1-Mohs Scale 1.Talc/Gypsum 2.Diamond 3.Steel File 4.Glass 5.T 6.T 7.T 8.F (they are titanium ores) Feldspar
5
Station 2- Mineral or Not? 1.Snowflake-Yes 2.Pearl-No (organic) 3.Wood-No (organic) 4.Sapphire-Yes 5.Seashell- No (organic) 6.Sugar- No (organic) 7.Zinc- Yes 8.Sulfur-Yes 9.Salt-Yes 10.Oxygen- No (not solid)
6
Station 3- Hardness tests 1.A (talc) is softer than your fingernail 2.B (corundum) is harder than glass 3.C (flourite) harder than your fingernail, but softer than glass 4.No- anything above a 5.5 on the Mohs scale will scratch glass, it could be quartz, topaz, etc
7
Station 4- Luster 1.Sulfur-Non metallic 2.Gypsum- Non metallic 3.Flourite- Non metallic 4.Quartz- Non metallic 5.Garnet- Non metallic 6.Galena- metallic
8
Station 5- Other properties 1.Calcite- double images 2.Mica- flat and see through 3.Magnitite- can pick it up with a magnet 4.Sulfur- bright yellow and smells like eggs
9
Station 6- Fracture and Cleavage 1.Mica- C 2.Gypsum- C 3.Pyrite- F 4.Galena- C 5.Halite- C 6.Olivine- F
10
Station 7- Streak Brown-red HematiteGypsumHornblende WhiteTan
11
Station 8-Crystal Structure All salt crystals are shaped like cubes
12
Station 9- Honey Bunches Five minerals found: –Sodium, Calcium, Iron, Zinc, Potassium
13
Station 10- Chicken Breast Two minerals found –Sodium and iron –Sodium- helps nervous and muscle systems function properly –Iron- helps with production of red blood cells
14
Station 11-Cereal Cheerios contains more minerals Copper is the additional mineral
15
Station 12- Minerals and Functions Chromium helps with insulin production Sulfur helps control oxygen levels in the brain Potassium makes up the outer walls of our cells Manganese in found in all body tissues
16
Station 13- Peaches Sodium and Potassium are found in peaches It got into the peach through the roots from the soil
17
Page 30 1.)Cleavage- mineral breaks along flat surfaces Fracture- mineral breaks along uneven surfaces 2.)Crystal- regular, repeating pattern of atoms in a solid Mineral- a naturally occurring, inorganic crystalline solid 3.)Luster- how light reflects from a mineral Streak- the color of the powdered mineral 4.)Magma- is molten rock material Crystals- form from magma as it cool and hardens 5.)Hardness- how easily a mineral can be scratched Specific gravity- weight of a mineral relative to the weight of an equal amount of water
18
Page 30 - part 2 6.)Ore- mineral or rock with useful substance that can be mined for a profit Mineral- a naturally occurring, inorganic crystalline solid with a definite chemical composition 7.)Crystal- solid with an orderly internal arrangement of atoms Luster- how light reflects from a mineral 8.)Mineral- Minerals make up rocks Silicate- is a rock forming mineral that contains silicon and oxygen 9.)Gem- is a rare and beautiful mineral Crystal- solid with an orderly internal arrangement of atoms 5.)Streak- the color of the powdered mineral Specific gravity- weight of a mineral relative to the weight of an equal amount of water
