Design Review: Remote Controlled Security System Nate Horner Aric Schorr

Project Description The project will provide live video feed, and give the user control over the movement and position of the security camera Provide secure, reliable video surveillance. Manual point-click positioning using GUI image. Auto Pan

Operating Range The system will operate control over the security camera via two internet connections: one to download the video from the web camera, and a second to maintain control over the microcontroller 180 o horizontal pan motion 90 o vertical pan motion 20 second auto pan period 2 FPS display over internet connection

Parts 1 - Linksys Wireless Webcam 1 - Linksys Wireless Webcam 2 - HS-985MG Servo Motors 2 - HS-985MG Servo Motors AT91SAM7X256 Microcontroller AT91SAM7X256 Microcontroller 4 – OPB745 Photo Sensors 4 – OPB745 Photo Sensors

Actuator and Sensor Positioning

User Interface Camera View – display video or any connection issues with the webcam Power – disables and enables power of the webcam through the secure microcontroller connection Auto-Pan – Begins or stops auto-pan function at given vertical position Center Camera – centers servo motors to default starting position Status – Any position limits, error messages, or important status information

Operating Restrictions To provide a secure connection to the web camera it should be routed in a closed Ethernet loop. Doing otherwise would walk us into undocumented and proprietary Linksys information.

Underlying Workings Web Camera – The GUI will maintain a connection to download the video.asf file that contains the live streaming video. The GUI will take care of: –Web Camera connection maintenance and –Data packet to image conversion

Feasibility Web Camera – The internet connection, and video display has been shown to work with programs outside the one supplied with the web camera. This proves that the risk of ‘hacking’ into the web camera’s video display is possible. Wireshark (Ethereal) was used to sniff internet communication and discover where and how the video was coming from. Video Display – Converting the data from the incoming packets to images will be difficult, but follows the.ASF format.

Feasibility Originally, it was desired that the camera be capable of automatic motion tracking This would require analysis to be performed in real time as the camera operated, perferably by a FPGA or by the microcontroller, not by the host PC Integrating a web camera with a microcontroller and converting each image to a matrix and then analyzing was deemed too complicated

Testing and Integration Two separate communication paths: –GUI to Camera (Aric)‏ –GUI to Micro (Nate)‏ PC Web Camera GUI Stepper Motor Control Lines Microcontroller X-axis Motor Y-axis Motor Internet

Testing and Integration Each path will be developed and tested separately to ensure correct operation. The underlying functionality will be integrated in the GUI PC Web Camera GUI Stepper Motor Control Lines Microcontroller X-axis Motor Y-axis Motor Internet
