Hog Farming Geneva Chamber of Commerce Presented by Adam Jelfo, Lindsay DePalma, and Mark Mesmer

Geneva Chamber of Commerce A chamber of commerce is an association of businesspersons and merchants for the promotion of commercial interests in the community. Helps increase the promotion of current businesses, to shop locally, and promote Geneva as a visitor destination. Offers individuals a variety of programs and services to increase their marketing opportunities and ability to attract new clients.

Should a hog farm be built on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake?

Effect on Humans There have been events where the odor has caused respiratory problems to nearby neighbors. Some symptoms include increased sputum, cough, shortness of breath and chest tightness. Hog Farms emit large amounts of unregulated ammonia nitrogen gas. 10% of nearby neighbors of a hog farm found out that their underground wells were contaminated with excessive levels of nitrate (dangerous to infants).

Environmental Issues Hogs produce nearly 19 million tons of feces and urine each year. Extensive amounts of rainfall may cause runoff, the manure may eventually reach Seneca Lake, causing pollution. After the manure contaminates the lake, the water quality make decrease (Seneca Lake is an AA drinking water provider) Animals living in the lake, such as fish, will be harmed by a bacteria called Pfiesteria.

Tourism Geneva is known as the “Trout Capitol of the World” and hosts an annual trout derby (a major source of tourism). Water pollution (from manure) may kill many of the fish, causing a decrease in tourism for the area. Wineries are a key factor for tourism in the Finger Lakes Area. The odor from the hog farm could cause the people to visit a different winery, taking away money and tourism from our community.

Economic Issues Average cost for a medium hog farm is approximately $1,000,000. Tourism is the employer of many jobs, giving money to numerous families. If tourism is decreased, then many people’s wages may also decrease.

Ways to Improve the Safety of Hog Farms Require that all hog farms meet the performance standards, and that hog farms use an effective waste management system. Future hog farms should not be located near a body of water or a major tourism source. Local Governments should have the authority to check on Hog Farms annually to promote safety of the community.

Pictures Concerning The Issue

Summary Based on our research, we have come to a conclusion that having a Hog Farm will harm our community. For the reasons mentioned in the previous slides, such as Tourism, Economic Issues, Environmental Issues, and The Effect On Humans.
