AQUATIC SPORTS IN TENERIFE As we live on an island, it is easy for us to practise this kind of sports because the sea is always present in our lives. We will speak of different sports of our island

PAST There seems to be not much information about swimming in the past. LOS SALESIANOS is a Canarian club of swimming who have participated in great championships for thirty years obtaining several victories.

PRESENT A Spanish swimmer, David Meca, went from the island of La Gomera to Tenerife swimming. It was a great success. He swam among whales, dolphins and other marine animals. It was a very long distance, but nonetheless he achieved it.

FUTURE In the future, I believe that there will be more swimming clubs and that they will continue participating in championships all over the world. They will swim between islands as David Meca did. I also suppose that we will have a more swimming pools both with sweet and salty water in all the islands, specially for this type of events.

PAST The passengers and goods’ movement between ports on the same island, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma fundamentally, was done by sloop, boat and gig well into the XX century. The reason was the scanty of roads joining the villages in every island.

PRESENT In the present, this is not practised so much like before because people prefer other sports like swimming, windsurfing, surfing, etc., but it continues being practised in the same way as in the past.

FUTURE In the future, I believe that sailing will be practised even less, since there are not may people who practise it, though everything can change.

The underwater fishing is a very extended sport in the Canary Islands because since the old days (PAST) the original indigenous inhabitants practised it as sustenance. At PRESENT, many young people, and not so young, practise it as a hobby or even professionally. Probably, in the FUTURE it won’t be practised so much because each time there are more laws that rule the places where it is possible to fish and also laws for the quantity of fish that can be captured.

(PRESENT)The apnea is not one of the most practised sports but it is mainly practised among the people who practise scuba diving and underwater fishing. In the PAST, the apnea was not practised as a sport, but as a way of holding one’s breath for some time in order to fish. In the FUTURE, people will probably practise it more, because it is a sport that is taking reputation as some people here are winning competitions.

(PRESENT)This is not a very practised sport here as such, but it is something that young people do often when they go to the beach. In PAST, the original inhabitants surely did it also for fun or for showing their courage. In the FUTURE, I don’t believe that thing will change very much.

Windsurfing is not an indigenous sport in the Canary Islands, but it is very practised by Canarian young people. These islands have a suitable weather to practise this sport. In a few years, people may practise this sport much more, as it is very amusing.

Surfing in the Canary Islands is a sport that is starting being practised by more people than before, as the equipments are getting cheaper.

The canoeing that is practised in the Canary Islands is called “sea kayak”. In our high school, there is the Spanish Champion in 2003-2004. Sea kayak has each time more followers. There is a club in San Andrés to which you can go to learn and train. By canoe, you can watch our coast and see wonderful landscapes. We invite you to know them!
