Although his captors offered to release him after six months due to his father's high position in the U.S. military, McCain refused unless every man captured before him was also freed. He served five and a half years in a POW camp before his release in March 1973. He received the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. Mc Cain has over 20 years of experience and is a war veteran. Many believe this experience would help him in the conflicts America is current in.
