NETiquette: Discussion Board Etiquette Expectations for Discussing Current Events Online

What is a Discussion Board? it is a way of sharing ideas with others using the computer as a tool it is a discussion that is written rather than spoken it is a place where many people can discuss the same topic at once your ideas are displayed for everyone to read you can get instant feedback from other students teachers can read and comment on your thoughts immediately It is an extension of the classroom - the classroom online

How are we using a Discussion Board with Current Events? 1.) Just as we did in class, a current event will be presented and then discussed. We will have 5 or 6 current events being discussed every week. 2.) Students will be asked to find and link their current event to Mrs. Nishimura's Sharepoint site. 3.) We will read and then discuss a question based on the news story. 4.) We will have some lab time to work on the discussions, but there is an expectation that students will be accessing the site from home as well. 5.) Those students who present the current event will monitor the discussion and comment as necessary.

How do we properly discuss online? Criteria for Positive Discussions your comment is based on the article read it answers the question that was given proper sentence structure, punctuation and capitalization are used the comments reflect your opinion, but never criticize the person presenting the current event your response should be thoughtful and consist of about 5-8 sentences in length The GOLDEN RULE applies both on and offline

How will students be evaluated? Mrs. Nishimura will continually monitor the discussions and comment as she sees fit. Those presenting current events will be given marks for providing an appropriate link, monitoring discussions and providing periodic feedback. /25 Those offering comments on the discussion board will be given marks for offering thoughtful, well written work. /25 *Marks will be deducted for slang, "MSN" lingo, negative remarks, incomplete sentences, chit chat, unnecessary punctuation or symbols.
