3. Carl Van Vechten Photographs Collection photos from 1932-1964 are found at the Library of Congress the collection consists of 1,395 photographs most of the collection consists of portraits and only a small portion of the collection is of American landscapes

4. Biography Carl Van Vechten was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on June 17, 1880. In 1899, Van Vechten left Iowa to attend the University of Chicago, where he explored art, music, and opera. He worked for the University of Chicago Weekly at this time. Van Vechten's first job was with the Chicago American. In 1906, Van Vechten became assistant music critic at the New York Times. In the early 1930s, Miguel Covarrubias gave Van Vechten a 35mm Leica camera and he began photographing his friends and acquaintances. Van Vechten's portraits are usually busts or half-length poses in front of striking backgrounds. Van Vechten died in 1964 but had continued writing and photographing throughout his life.
