3 Dr. Dwight B. Waldo Waldo was first named Western State Normal School Principle on April 1, 1904 Four years later he was named Western State Normal School president and served as President until SEPTEMBER 1, 1936 "He was a man who had all the attributes of a successful businessman and all the qualities of a day dreamer — a realist and an idealist harmoniously blended," according to the WMU historian James O. 4 The first W.M.U building constructed was in the fall 0f 1905, It was the Administration Building, and is now known as East Hall. http://www.ur.wmich.edu/centennial/history_timeline.html

5 Suggested by Josephine Jackson, who served many positions at Western including registrar, publicity director, and librarian. WMU adopted brown and gold as its official school colors in 1904. The colors represent the brown-eyed Susans that used to thrive on WMU's original Prospect Hill campus.

6 Western Opens its doors? Western State Normal School officially opens on June 27, 1904. Construction on a building to house it hadn't even begun! Its 117 enrolled students from 13 Michigan counties had to attend classes in the Kalamazoo High School Building!

7 Why The Hilltoppers? WMU's athletic teams initially went by the nickname "Hilltoppers," reflecting the institution's original Prospect Hill campus.
