1 Dean R Walters Chamber and Bellows IDRdrw@aps.anl.gov Jan. 5, 2006 1 Summary Chamber The plan is to construct a chamber made of 316LN stainless steel with an interior coating of aluminum. The switch from copper to aluminum supported be the work on AC Conductivity where Al has slightly higher conductivity than Cu. U Profile vacuum chamber has a deflection <6  m and stresses lower than 42 MPa. The support has the adjustability and the strength, 4.8 MPa, to bear the load of the chamber Vendor samples have been measured with surface finishes smoother than 25 nm. Samples have been formed into a U shape and the surfaces of some of the samples are smoother than 400 nm. A series of Laser weld tests have been completed and a set of welding parameters have been determined that can yield penetrations up to 1.5 mm. Aluminum has been sputtered onto stainless steel and the strength of the adhesion passed the ‘scotch tape’ test after baking. To work within the tight space restrictions of the Short (and Long) Break the EVAC Cefix flange has been selected as the vacuum seal. Bellows Bellows assembly is designed for transverse displacement of  2 mm Spring fingers of thickness of 0.15 mm has a stress <226 MPa in the case of displacement of 2 mm Selected spring fingers to be made of BeCu, stub of OFE Cu, and the bellows of 347 SST Plating on the fingers and the stub are Ag and Rd, a lab test will be performed to determine the plating thickness

2 Dean R Walters Chamber and Bellows IDRdrw@aps.anl.gov Jan. 5, 2006 2 Conclusions Chamber Chamber and support designs are completed FE analysis is completed A plan for chamber construction has been made Samples have been made of the fabrication processes: polishing, coating, bending, and welding. Test plan and schedule have been presented The prototype is ready to start construction Bellows Bellows design is completed FE analysis is completed Test plan and schedule have been presented The prototype bellows is ready to start construction
