Problems everywhere Frankfurt Paris –Le Bourget –Orly –Charles de Gaulle Londen Zurich And Schiphol

AotF20060330|      This is what we normally regulate 21 03

AotF20060330|      An airport attracts activities Airport Industry Shops Offices Houses

AotF20060330|      But its effects Risk Noise Air pollution Traffic congestion

AotF20060330|      Need space Airport Industry Shops Offices Houses People

AotF20060330|      Vicious circle Airport Industry Shops Offices Houses People

AotF20060330|      Muddling through OLD NEW Problems Solutions ? New zones New limits New Regulatory Systems

AotF20060330|      Schiphol Noise –KE contour => –L den in points and Total Volume of Sound => –Total of points (??) Risk –Numbers of houses inside 10 -5, 10 -6, 10 -7, 10 -6 and societal risk –Summed weighed risk –Numbers of houses inside 10 -6 and total risk weight –Numbers of houses inside 10 -6 (+ 30%) Airpollution –Air traffic + road traffic (masks air) Odour –Given up

AotF20060330|      Perceptions Perceptions are facts. And if perceptions are not facts people act on them and these actions are facts. Or create facts. Perceptions are difficult to change. Because they are part of the basic survival mechanism.

AotF20060330|      In the mean time Population around the airport gave up –Does not trust airport –Does not trust authorities Went through several committees, all dismantled And the airport grows further

AotF20060330|      What do we have to assume? Continued growth? –Physical limitations –What about fuel costs Or develop into a station in a network –With limited capacity –But share with others Or are the fuel prices going to do us in Or competition?

AotF20060330|      Why are we here?? Just enough fuel No more problem

AotF20060330|      Pricing Amsterdam – New York Why would a 2000 km detour be CHEAPER?

AotF20060330|      Think European ? There are not enough Dutchman to fill all the aircraft

AotF20060330|      Rethink the airport OLD NEW Problems Solutions There is a limit to every growth model Public transport system No unnecessary moves You do not have to be a hub to be connected An airport city is NOT a CITY !

AotF20060330|      This is not a city It is an industrial area

AotF20060330|      This is a city With an aircraft in the sky

AotF20060330|      OLD NEW Problems Solutions !

AotF20060330|      New solutions ? If there is a shortage to capacity –You can be selective  On risk and noise –And other airports are collegues  In solving the long-range transport problems  Rather than the competintion If you are an airport –You do in airtraffc –Which is not the same as real estate –Or a shopping centre

AotF20060330|      New mind set ! An airport is primarily a station/node in a public transport network Providing a service against reasonable costs And as little burden to its surroundings as possible You do not want to be visible You want to be INVISIBLE –(sort of)

AotF20060330|      Government attitude is changing (slowly) Use to be promotor of air-traffic and airport development Increasing burden –Not only environment –But also use of space –And traffic congestion Treat as any other industry Many existing privileges will disappear Especially after the next accident.

AotF20060330|      Most locations are better

AotF20060330|      New solutions ? Recognise the problems –Noise, risk, air pollution Treat air traffic as an industry –Providing transport And airports as industrial zones Take people seriously –Keep away if you can –Treat them fairly if you cannot –Buying them off is only temporary solution They are ALSO your customers And voters

AotF20060330|      Opportunities ? 90% of communication between people is non- verbal: see/smell/feel: people need to be in close contact More people more transport Global world gives more transport needs Electronic connectivity increases need for face to face contact (ie transport) Flying is public/mass transport

AotF20060330|      To hear him fly It has to be silent

AotF20060330|     
