A Dialogue With the Community: Wireless Expansion, Network Connectivity, and the Rate Model Telecommunications Advisory Board

Telecomm AB Charge Serve as an advisory group to the Vice Provost for Information and Educational Technology (IET); Review IET telecommunications deployment plans and assist with the establishment of deployment priorities; Review assessments of current campus telecommunications infrastructure as well as future needs, planned technology deployments and service solutions; Develop proposals and recommendations for meeting the anticipated telecommunications service needs of campus research, academic, administrative and student constituencies; Consult with respective campus constituents and groups for input and agreement on issues; Advise the Vice Provost for IET on ways to effectively promote and support the use of telecommunications technology in furtherance of campus strategic goals; Present committee recommendations and findings to the Vice Provost for IET on a regular basis. Formal reports will be shared with CCFIT, the Provost, Deans and Vice Chancellors and other campus committees.

Goal of this Meeting Give campus community an opportunity to share their thoughts on four issues the Advisory Board is examining Mine the campus community for alternate ideas

Background Goal of networking infrastructure is to support research and instruction on campus Limited resources to do this Two main issues: – Network improvement and expansion – Improving the funding rate model

Questions Network Issues 1.Several buildings have CAT-3 wiring on campus rather than the faster CAT-5 wiring. How does this impact members of the campus community? We want to hear from those who are impacted, to use that input in making our recommendations. 2.We are interested in finding out the needs of people who require high speed connections to remote cluster environments. What do you need? 3.A campus task force made recommendations for expanding the wireless network. Should the priority ordering from that task group be revisited? What changes would most benefit the campus community? Rate Model The current rate structure is based on the number of active NAMS that a campus unit has. Given the move to wireless, this is no longer a realistic assessment of network use. A different model is required. Among the approaches being emphasized is one based on FTEs, on the theory that those units with more FTEs are the ones which require more CR resources. We would like opinions on this idea, and any other ideas for a more equitable rate structure.

How To Proceed Tell us which question (or questions) you are addressing We may intervene to ensure that as many people as possible get to speak – So if we ask you to make your points, please do so Please speak up!
