Poverty combating - one of the sustainable development aims.
2
Poverty is one of the main challenge for sustainable development. Poor people are often directly dependent on natural resources such as forests, land and sea. At the same time, there are many countries which already hardly suffer particularly from environmental degradation. It is impossible to combat poverty without taking into account the natural resources and the environment that people are dependent on and on which they build their livelihood. The environment and sustainable development affect all sectors. The main points are: determine main sustainable development problems connected with poverty; review SIDA’s poverty reduce activities and perspectives.

Sweden is one of the pioneer-countries organizing cooperation with developing countries to reach the main goals in poverty combating. Swedish international development cooperation agency (SIDA) is a governmental organization which works to provide sustainable development through combating with poverty. Examples of efforts that Sweden is involved in: Support for partner countries brings the opportunity to test new technology within sustainable urban development and renewable energy. Strengthening developing countries’ ability to make their voice heard in climate change negotiations. Greater knowledge has led to raising climate change on the agenda in many countries. The World Bank’s water and sanitation program in Africa. The Asia Sustainable and Alternative Energy Program (ASTAE) in countries such as Bangladesh, India, China and Vietnam, for long-term sustainable energy solutions.

SIDA’s work with environmentally sustainable development takes a great part its activity. In 2008, about SEK 1.8 billion of the bilateral development assistance through SIDA was used in efforts promoting the environment and sustainable development. A further SEK 7.4 billion was used for efforts where the subsidiary objective was to promote the environment and sustainable development. Funds to promote the environment and climate are also supplied through the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, primarily through support for UN organizations, development banks and support for the Global Environment Facility (GEF)
