Mexico's total area covers 1,972,550 square kilometers, including approximately 6,000 square kilometers of islands in the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of California

14 Mexico's desert regions lie towards the north of the country - in the states of Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. One of Mexico's major cities, Monterrey, is located in the middle of Mexico's desert region; flanked by the majestic Sierra Madre mountains. Enviorment

16 Society & Culture In addition to the country's international standing in painting and architecture, Mexico is also well represented in all the other arts. In 1990 Octavio Paz, the famous Mexican author, won the Nobel Prize for Literature. In 1551 the first university in America was founded in Mexico City.

17 Society & Culture Over three-quarters of the people are Roman Catholics. Protestant churches include Pentecostal and Jehovah's Witnesses. Mexican folk dance and music is important to Mexican culture. Traditional Amerindian folk dances have been incorporated into Christian festivities.Mexican folk music is based mainly on the guitar. Mariachi bands in which the guitars are backed up by trumpets and violins are popular strolling players.

19 Oral History Interview What is it to live there? Marco: I never lived there but it seems cool and fun. There's more freedom over there to do what you want. You can drive at a younger age. Can you describe your favorite place to be when you visit and why? Marco: My favorite place in Mexico is Cancun. It’s a vacation spot where you can go and have fun and party. What's your favorite Mexican food ? Marco: My favorite Mexican food is Tacos. My Older Brother: Marco A. Herrera

21 Economics About 18% of working population is employed in agriculture. Oil production plays a major part in the Mexican economy. Other resources are natural gas, silver, copper, gold, lead and zinc

22 Economics The variation in climate leads to the production of a variety of crops such as wheat, corn, beans, tomatoes, potatoes, cocoa, coffee, rice, (chicle) gum and tobacco. Mexico produces honey, oranges, bananas and pineapples. The agricultural sector includes ranches with large herds of beef cattle. Mexican fisheries produce shrimps, prawns, oysters, sardine and tuna.

23 Economics Mexico City and the surrounding area is an important manufacturing region. There is a domestic motor vehicle industry. Industries include iron and steel, consumer durables, chemicals, textiles, clothing, and food and beverages. Mexico also has a flourishing crafts industry making items such as pottery and furniture. 24 Economics Tourism a major earner of foreign currency. Cancun, the huge tourist resort area on the Yucatan coast, earns much of Mexico's tourist revenue. Another source of hard currency is the money sent back to the country by Mexicans working in the USA

25 Politics Felipe Calderon President of Mexico Politics of Mexico are based on a congressional system, where the president of Mexico is both head of state and head of govermnent, and of a multi-party system. The politics of Mexico are dominated by three political parties: National Action Party (PAN), the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) and Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

26 Politics The Federeal Goverment is made up of 3 Branches. Executive Legislature Judicial As establishe by the Constitution, published in 1917. The Constitution

27 Politics The executive branch is headed by the President, advised by a cabinet of secretaries that are independent of the legislature. Legisleture power is vested upon the Congress of the Union, a two-chamber legislature comprising the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. Judicial power is exercised by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, the Council of the Federal Judiciary and the collegiate, unitary and district tribunals.
