Action plan for COST Action 636 WG 4: Analytical issues

COST Action 636 1 st Meeting, Copenhagen, September 6-8, 2005 Main objective of COST action 636 “…to assess the role of xenobiotics in the urban water cycle and to set up strategies for minimising their impact on humans and ecosystems”  need for analytical tools for identification and quantification of xenobiotics in the urban water cycle identification and quantification of their impact on humans and ecosystems

COST Action 636 1 st Meeting, Copenhagen, September 6-8, 2005 WG 4 Action plan month 1 – 6 (I) Selection of target compounds (in collaboration with other WG) Criteria: Occurrence in the urban water cycle throughout Europe Occurrence in most of the compartments of the urban water cycle in Europe Emerging compounds preferred Sub-criteria: toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation Examples: Pharmaceuticals (X-ray contrast media, lipid-regulators, beta-blockers, NSAID, antibiotics) Biocides (Triclosan, Sea nine, BAC…) Heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Zn)

COST Action 636 1 st Meeting, Copenhagen, September 6-8, 2005 WG 4 Action plan month 1 – 6 (II) Selection of target compounds Questionnaire A (target compounds, relevant matrices): Month 1: preparation and sending it out to all COST 636 participants Month 2: reply of the participants Month 3: evaluation of the data Questionnaire B (analytical methods): Month 4: sending it out to WG 4 participants Month 5: reply of the participants Month 6: evaluation of the data Presentation of results: 2nd meeting

COST Action 636 1 st Meeting, Copenhagen, September 6-8, 2005 WG 4 Action plan month 7 – 12 (I) Interlaboratory study: Selection of compounds and matrices according to questionnaire results Preconditions: No CRM available No commercial provider Preparation of a draft protocol for sampling, sample preparation, shipment, storage Examples: Pharmaceuticals (NSAID, sulfonamides) Non-agricultural biocides

COST Action 636 1 st Meeting, Copenhagen, September 6-8, 2005 WG 4 Action plan month 7 – 12 (II) Literature survey on analytical techniques for target compounds in different matrices Tasks will be distributed between WG 4 participants during month 6 meeting Quality control of existing methods described in literature Identification of knowledge gaps and research needs Outcome could be published in a review article

COST Action 636 1 st Meeting, Copenhagen, September 6-8, 2005 WG 4 Action plan: Future topics Advanced analytical technologies (incl. biosensors, nanotechnologies, adsorbents) Invite company representatives, additional experts Quality control for research laboratories Minimum requirements for publications of analytical methods Tools for toxicity evaluation, TIE (together with WG 3) Sampling Sum parameters Degradation products (together with WG 2) Analytical methods for identification of sources (together with WG 1) Concepts for identification of future emerging compounds

COST Action 636 1 st Meeting, Copenhagen, September 6-8, 2005 WG 4: Future meetings April 2006 (Lubljana, Karlsruhe): Selection of target compounds Analytical methods for target compounds in different matrices Set-up of interlaboratory study Start of literature search on analytical methods (distribution of tasks between participants) September 2006 (Luxembourg): Results of interlaboratory exercise Results of literature survey
