7 Shared Storage: State of the Art Three new high-density modules –4.8 million vol equivalent constructed in 2005 –Steady temperature of 50 F and relative humidity of 30% –Monitored by 3 different types of security measures

8 Redefine Library Holdings Acknowledge the continuing importance of print Consolidate materials for deep research across institutions Build trusted repository for key print resources, e.g., JSTOR Move beyond redundant ownership of individual items to joint ownership of whole collections Challenge the notion of a library’s standing defined by collection size Create pathways to future collection building and license arrangements

12 Timeline and Contact Summer 2006 –Storage Service (leasing space and delivering customer’s own materials stored at Cornell’s facility) Summer 2006 – 2007: – Obtain Cornell University approval – Partner with 2-3 selected NYS academic libraries to develop Catalyst service model Governance Policies Overlap analysis Union catalog Delivery logistics Performance measurements and management tools Aim to make subscriptions available in summer or fall of 2007
