3 Student life in China  Classes through the day  Most students take classes in holidays and weekends  Lectures; no discussion  Courses are mandatory. No selection.  Learn only what will be tested in the Entrance Examination  Poor extracurricular activities

4 Outcome of this education  Multiple choices, short answers and calculations: require huge amount work of reciting and practicing  No paper is done: poor comprehension and analyzing ability.

5 National Entrance Examination  Admission only by scores  Craze for famous colleges  Exam format: Multiple choices and short answers; no papers  Mathematics: focus on calculation  History, politics, literature, English: rote learning

6 Facts and Figures  Average high school size: 1093 (yr.2002)  Number of high school students: 16,838,105  7.23 million students took national exam  3.8 million (53%) of who are admitted  67.7% of students have less than 7 hours sleep per day  41.6% have less than 0.5 hours free time; 20% have no free time at all!!
