3. Overview Through a range of programs, New Vision works with students of color, from grades nine (9) through grade twelve (12), to help them take advantage of educational and career opportunities. Founded in 1987, the New Vision is one of the very few organizations dedicated to success of students who at a high risk of becoming incarcerated by their early teens. Its goal is to increase the number of educated students of color who have the potential of becoming a significant figure in leadership and responsibility in American Society. Through its biggest sponsor, New Beginnings for at risk youth, New Vision recruits youth from the courts system who have been entered into its system as “At risk” because of lack of knowledge, criminal behavior and/or insufficient income for an individual family, and places them in academically rigorous private boarding schools as well as outstanding public high schools on suburban communities. Each year nearly 300 students are placed in member schools nation wide bringing the annual enrollment to approximately 1500.

4. Overview Continued More than 85% of New Vision’s graduating seniors go on to higher education: many at top rank Black Colleges and Universities. Over 95% of them go on to receive college degrees, and many go on to pursue graduate study as well. In its first ten years, New Vision has produced over 22,000 alumni through its program. Many of these students of very under- estimated in society and really have the potential at being the very best at their desired professions. Not only this, but an increasing number of alumni return to contribute to the educational outreach of “At Risk “ youth. Some to their old campus but others find the time to manage their jobs and begin a similar outreach program.

Financial Aid New Vision is not responsible for financial aid; It is awarded to students by the organizations that accept their application and bases it on its own guidelines and analysis of the family total financial situation. More families than not are accepted for some form of financial aid.

6. Mentors and Role Models In addition to their wonderful schooling system, new vision also provides members on their staff dedicated to the students needs. They also take the time to actively speak to the students as a whole and as individuals.

7. Mentor And Role Models A vast majority of these staff members are alumni from the organization and know full well the extent of what these kids go through daily. This has been named the most productive part of the program.

9. College Prep High School Requirements  4 years in English  4 years in math  3 years of science  3 years in history  2 years in a foreign language  2 years in computer science  2 years in African American history  1 year in physical education  1 year in U.S history

10. Public School Program (PSP) A Boarding School student attending a New Vision orientated PSP lives in a community with an outstanding public high school. Six to twelve students reside in a dormitory residence, supervised by resident directors and tutors and attend the local high school.

11. Boarding School Program (BS) Boarding school scholars attending an independent school lives on a campus in a dormitory and attends classes held on campus. The dormitory is supervised by resident faculty and staff.

12. Public and Boarding School In both boarding options, New Vision students live away from home during the academic year, returning home for the summer and school vacations. If suspicion of teen doing something to jeopardize their freedom, the family has the option of having student remain at school and having them continue with their education or talk with a mentor for further evaluation

13. School Holidays and Mandatory Recess Schools recesses for 3 weeks for Christmas/ Kwanzaa vacation and again for spring vacation. School recesses for 3 weeks prior to summer school and 2 weeks after summer school. 3 days for thanksgiving. Martin Luther King jr., Malcolm X, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglas and a few other birthdays.
