2 Social Movement Organization: SMO Prior 1960s: SM Not Very Organized 1960s: SM are highly Organized in Two Ways: Informally: The networks through which people are mobilized Formally: SM have internal organizations

3 Social Movement Organization: SMO SMO: Types McCarthy and Zald: SMO as Firms, part of a SM Industry Tilly: He used political rather than economic terms Political-Process: SMO like parties, except they operate outside the system.

4 Social Movement Organization: SMO Neo-Classical View: People are Self-Interested Each incorporated neo-classical assumption that individuals are self- interested, even selfish. But this cannot explain all the reasons why people join SM.

5 Social Movement Organization: SMO Neo-Classical: Cannot Explain Why People Get in Involved The neo-classical view ignores “one of the central issues in SM: how people come to perceive a shared grievance…esp. in an issue that is remote from their lives. Emotions in Politics There are emotions that go into the construction of SM goals. People get something out of politics.

6 Social Movement Organization: SMO New Institutionalism Organizational structures are not simply about efficiency, they also reflect and transmit values.
