3 3 Opportunity Participate in research project starting up in CSE department Goal: to discover the “task model” that programmers use when maintaining concurrent software Participants: –Scott Fleming (PhD student) –Prof. Kurt Stirewalt MSU/CSE –Prof. Eileen Kraemer UGA/CS and MSU/CSE –Prof Zach Hambrick MSU/Psychology –You?

4 4 User describes what he is thinking while doing task What they believe is happening Why they take an action What they are trying to do Video capture of sessions Transcription of video Analysis of transcript according to scoring sheets –raw protocol -> encoded protocol Task models compared to models Think Aloud protocol

5 5 Your role Prompter – sit in on sessions during which participants are performing a maintenance task; “prompt” participants to verbalize Transcriber – transcribe voice-over to time- annotated text format Analyzer – “code” raw protocols using scoring sheets

6 6 Time commitment Training as prompter – 30 minutes Working as prompter – 3-5 sessions (9-15 hours) Training as transcriber – 30 minutes Working as transcriber – 10-15 hours Training as coder – 1 hour Working as coder – 10 - 15 hours

7 7 Benefits Team project work happens near beginning of semester, leaving you more time later in the semester for projects in other courses Opportunity to participate in research –especially good if you’re considering going to grad school Potential to participate in a publication –Again, useful for grad school applicants

8 8 How many people can participate? You will work in teams of 3 or 4 One or two teams

9 9 When would I start? Prompter training during week of 9/17 Participant sessions during week of 9/24 Transcription begins immediately after sessions complete Coding once transcriptions are done
