Faculty of Applied Business Mercator campus http://bmer.hogent.be Flemish Education Council (VLOR) and University College Ghent (HoGent) Validation of non-formal adult education courses: a pilot in Flanders Reaction conference, 14 September 2007

Faculty of Applied Business Mercator campus http://bmer.hogent.be Aims  generic transparent framework for smooth transfer from adult education CAE to higher education CHE  system to uniformly grant credits (via “exemptions”)  “study paths” towards bachelor degree  “competence schedule” cross-referencing CAE and CHE competences  quality control of full bachelor curriculum

Faculty of Applied Business Mercator campus http://bmer.hogent.be Starting points  CAE programs comparable => generic study paths  CAE programs not alike => dissimilar paths  All CHE course programmes unique => study paths towards our own ba only  Bachelor degree courses subject to Quality control (“Accreditation”) by Dutch-Flemish board: Requirements on ba degrees regarding international bench-marking, research-based input, workplace relevance, etc

Faculty of Applied Business Mercator campus http://bmer.hogent.be Methodology  Compare competences  Knowledge  Professional skills  Professional attitudes  Define “exemptions”  Define paths to acquire remaining competences

Faculty of Applied Business Mercator campus http://bmer.hogent.be Listing competences ECTS-sheets list competences per CHE subject Knowledge: CAE syllabuses, exams, etc Skills and attitudes: CAE papers, cases, presentations, exams, etc => All ects sheets together constitute CHE competence list => Competence cross-referencing table

Faculty of Applied Business Mercator campus http://bmer.hogent.be CAE Competence table Every CAE module (may) contribute relevant competences (knowledge/ skill/ attitude) CAE modules which do not contribute relevant knowledge content, may still contribute relevant skills competences CAE modules which do not contribute relevant skills may still contribute relevant knowledge

Faculty of Applied Business Mercator campus http://bmer.hogent.be Cross-referencing competences Every CAE module is “mined” for its knowledge/ skill/ attitude competences Knowledge/ skill/ attitude “levels” are attributed to CHE subjects Levels are attributed to CAE competences If levels correspond and CHE competences are covered by CAE module, exemption is granted for corresponding CHE subject

Faculty of Applied Business Mercator campus http://bmer.hogent.be Cross-referencing competences Every CHE subject is “filled in” as far as possible by various CAE modules; as regards contents (knowledge), skills and attitude CHE subjects which are completely covered (“filled in”) at relevant level by CAE modules are exempted

Faculty of Applied Business Mercator campus http://bmer.hogent.be Cross-referencing competences CHE subjects which are not fully covered, may be exempted if missing competences are covered in remaining CHE study path CHE subjects whose competences are insufficiently covered, make up the additional study path
