Brittle Books Program

Preparation of Materials for PASCAL

Assessment Program Building surveys –Norlin Library –Disaster planning for all libraries Environmental Monitoring Program –Done in cooperation with FacMan’s re- commissioning of the building –Windows study by architect to improve building envelope –Gas tracer test by Engineering Grads –NEH grant proposal developed for 2006

Building survey Revelations We found a number of potential hazards, including plants growing up next to the building, potential flood sites, some security issues. By working with Facilities Management in its efforts to save energy, we found a lot of ways to save energy and improve environmental conditions for the collections

Environmental Monitoring Facilities management used our environmental data to help re-commission the HVAC in the building—improving conditions for the collections We learned a lot about where the problems were and pointed out the needs of the collection

A complex system The process allowed us to map out all the air handling equipment in Norlin There are 18 air handlers that govern collection areas Our data loggers showed FacMan how well their equipment was working in many areas of the collection

Expanding the Program We plan to expand the environmental monitoring program to other branches We have three Pinnacle data loggers that record and download the environmental data directly to the internet; anybody can check the conditions from any computer. The Pinnacles will notify us when a problem occurs

Assessment of Collections Why do the assessment of collections?

Library collections are a permanent asset of the university

How Will We Do It? Highly specialized and carefully designed instruments, used by highly trained experts

Statistical Sampling Examine various strata in the collections Use the Innovative inventory module 95% confidence of accuracy

Information Gathered Examine each item for general condition, use, recommended treatment option Types of damage –Environmental –Inherent vice –Use Types of treatments recommended

Current Options Commercial Binding options Archival photocopy Basic repairs Off-site storage

Other Possible Options Digitization or microfilming More advanced repairs Conservation treatment Mass deacidification

Compile the data Review by bibliographers and collection development Calculate the extent of need Calculate basic costs of procedures Suggest priorities for preservation

Types of things we expect …

There’s the unexpected …

Why are we doing this? Directive from the review panel Comparison of our program and needs with other ARL libraries Influence of electronic resources and push for digitization
