Visualizing Multiple Physician Office Locations Exercise 9 GIS in Planning and Public Health Wansoo Im, Ph.D

As we see the result of geocoded physician’s office addresses, there are many physicians who have same addresses. When we geocode those addresses, it represented as one dot on the map even though there are multiple points. In this exercise, we will learn how to create different size of symbol of point based on number of physician’s office on the same location.

We need to export the attribute table of physician address file.

We don’t need to add the data into the current map. We are going to manipulate by using Excel.

Now we can open the file (the exported file) by using Excel. By using x,y coordinates, we have to create a unique variable by combining x and y. The formulat is = D2 & “_”&E2 Please remember some of the computer has Macro virus, you can not see A, B, C, D column. You need to address corresponding cell location when you put into formula.

By using pivot table function in Excel, we can calculate number of doctor offices which has same x, y points

Once you get the result, you need to clean the output in DBF format

After copy and paste special-value function.

By using convert text to columns function, we can now separate the x and y point, so it can be imported in ArcGIS

After you separate the variable, make sure we define decimal points for the variables which have decimal points. Also delete the row (last one) which has total value.

Save the file in dbf IV format
