A number of symbols of Europe has emerged throughout history. Most well known symbols were created by the Council of Europe in the 1950s and 1960s. On the 9th of May 1950, Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations. This proposal, known as the "Schuman declaration", is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union. Today, the 9th of May has become a European symbol (Europe Day) which, along with the flag, the anthem, the motto and the single currency (the euro), identifies the political entity of the European Union. Europe Day is the occasion for activities and festivities that bring Europe closer to its citizens and peoples of the Union closer to one another.

5. The Flag of Europe
The Flag of Europe consists of a circle of twelve golden stars on a blue background. It was first adopted by the Council of Europe , which created it in 1955.

6. European anthem
The European anthem is based on the prelude to "The Ode to Joy", 4th movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. Due to the large number of languages in Europe, it is an instrumental version only with the original German lyrics having no official status. The anthem was announced on 19 January 1972 by the Council of Europe.

7. “United in diversity”
United in diversity was adopted as the European Union's motto in 2000 following an unofficial process. It was selected from entries proposed by school pupils submitted to the website and then accepted by the President of the European Parliament, Nicole Fontaine. “United in diversity” is the motto of the European Union.
The motto means that, via the EU, Europeans are united in working together for peace and prosperity, and that the many different cultures, traditions and languages in Europe are a positive asset for the continent.

The euro has become a symbol since it replaced 12 national currencies in It is now used by most EU Member States and hence it has become one of the most tangible symbols of European unity for citizens of the European Union.
