CMPUT 301: Lecture 34 Networks, Hypertext, Multimedia, and the Web Martin Jagersand Department of Computing Science University of Alberta Based on notes from Pierre Boulanger, Ken Wong, Martin Jagersand
3
2 The WEB Many servers, many content providers Loosely connected database Many formats, types of data Overwhelming?!?
4
3 The WEB Content Design Text: –Linear text –Hypertext, frames, navigability aids Multimedia: –sound –images –Animation, video –3D –Interaction, remote control, meetings
5
4 Page Design Cross-platform design: –many platforms –cell phone, handheld, notebook, desktop, high-end workstation, Networked meeting rooms, 3D Viz room –various versions of browsers –collect them all –WYSIWYG –he’s dead, Jim
6
5 Text Issue: –imposes a strict, linear progression on the reader, according to the author’s ideas of what is best
7
6 Hypertext and Hypermedia What: –non-linear structuring of information –traversed in many different ways –chunks of media –e.g., text, graphic, movie, voice, sound, etc. –links between chunks –e.g., technical terms, hotspots
8
7 Hypertext and Hypermedia What are some problems or issues for hypertext or hypermedia systems?
9
8 Hypertext and Hypermedia Some issues: –“lost in space” syndrome –presenting context –determining coverage –printing the content –supporting tours
10
9 World Wide Web Current Technologies: –web browser –web server –HTTP –HTML –CSS –CGI –Javascript –Java –plug-ins –SGML –XML –MathML –XHTML –DOM –XSL –…

10 IIRO Project Interactive Intelligent Remote Operations
12
11 Objectives of the IIRO Project One of the goals of this project is to demonstrate that safe, effective, and reliable monitoring and control of mine operations can be performed over satellite and terrestrial communication links (including the Internet), using models created from various sensors located in a mine.
