Take a minute, in your group, to assign jobs “leader” -- the person who more-or-less guides the discussion, being sure everyone takes a turn speaking and answering a question “note taker” -- person who takes notes “time keeper” -- person who keeps an eye on the time, knowing how long the work time is, helps the “leader” keep the group on task “reporter” -- person who reports out to the class if I call on your group

With your group, please read the CNN.com news clip, considering these questions (note-taker, you may want to write the questions down) 1.What are the “scientific” facts the article tells you? 2.What science does it assume you already know? 3.What terms do you NOT recognize? 4.What other information would you like to have? 5.If I said you had to explain this to someone who had never had a geology or earth science course, could you do that, really getting across what happened, and explaining the geology?

Earthquakes –where do they occur (tectonically)? –why do they occur? –what are different kinds of faults that earthquakes occur on? –does the earth only move in big motions? –how do we describe them in ways that most people can relate to? –what is the magnitude? what is the intensity? what’s the difference between the two?

Where do earthquakes occur? What do these belts correspond to?

Your clicker (closed book) please…

What is the relation between earthquakes and plate tectonics? 1.Earthquakes occur only along subduction boundaries 2.Most earthquakes occur along plate boundaries of any type 3.Earthquakes never occur away from plate boundaries 4.Earthquakes very rarely happen on divergent margins

Label the South American plate and the Nazca plate on the map. Also label what kind of crust each is. Plot the earthquake data. What is the basic relation between depth and distance from the trench? Answer the questions on the sheet.
